EDIT: Ended up getting one, update in Post #29 :)

I'm moving to France in just over two weeks, and taking my current phone (iPhone 5) with me. I want to keep using my British number abroad, but I'll also need a French number, so I'm looking to get another unlocked phone to use with my French SIM.

My main requirement is a good camera, and the 1020 seems to be one of the best - I had a play around with one when it was released and was very impressed. I'm planning on doing quite a lot of travelling and exploring in the next year or so, and I'd really like a phone which can double up as a decent point and shoot camera.

There's only two potential problems I can see: battery life, and the lack of google maps. I'll need the phone to last a days use, and reviews seem a bit mixed, with some people saying they go on for ever and others only getting a few hours out of a charge.

The google maps thing is probably the main thing stopping me. Whenever I've been abroad, I've found google maps incredibly useful for finding supermarkets, banks, etc, and their level of detail and information about places is second to none. I've got nav built into my car, but it's quite outdated so I'll likely be using the phone as my main navigation system, especially as I won't have data on my iPhone. I've seen various apps advertised which seem to be basically google maps clones, but are they any substitute for the real thing?

So, what do we think? Should I just go for it or are there other phones I should consider? I don't have a specific budget but I'd rather not spend the £300-£500 on the latest models when I can pick up a 1020 on ebay for £200ish.

Thanks :D

Battery wise you have a couple of options, buy the wireless battery cover and you can carry a wireless charging pad with built in battery with you.

A better idea is the camera handle converter you can get, it has a larger battery and a more proper camera grip.

Maps wise, remember Nokia maps comes with downloadable maps for all of Europe, and the world, no data required when in use.

I find the Nokia Maps to be better than the Google ones for driving etc. But I don't use it the same way as you do.

If you want to look at how long a phone lasts compare the battery size of phones of the same screen size. The 1020 has the best camera out of there. But because of the extreme high quality its not the fastest between shots. You might find a camera in another phone might suit being a point and shoot better. At least in daylight.

So for that reason I wonder would you not better with a S4 or 5 which has removable battery, can take an extended battery. Fast for P&S photos and has google maps which you want.

i had one of these for a week as a backup phone and thought it was superb

lovely fluid os and even better if you can get the 64gb one

the camera is amazing for a mobile

Well, you've convinced me! I'm picking one up tonight. Did look at the S4 but the camera and build quality isn't a patch on the 1020. Hopefully I've made the right decision. :)

Yea but the 1020 is going for about 200 right now if you go second hand.

Plus various updates have sped it up and now Windows 8.1

I would use the maps and camera whilst home first to make sure it is for you. Whilst offline maps are very useful, and HERE Drive is great, I find it lacking in the POI department. Will give you a chance to try out battery life too. The camera grip accessory will help hugely.

You want to be certain, if something is wrong when you go abroad you'll be gutted.

Just my 2p.

battery life is non issue. just get the grip and a portable battery charger.

gmail and facebook work great on windows 8 imo

I didn't like windows 8 at first coming from android. but since the update to windows 8.1 I'm loving my Lumia 1020
