Hi guys,

I've always had Windows machines and dabbled with Linux but I need a new portable laptop and I am considering a Macbook / Macbook Pro.

My question is, is now a good time to buy?

Are there any new models on the horizon?

What can i expect the cheapest prices to be for these models?

Thanks :)

If you're willing to go used, you can pick up second hand for a couple hundred less than retail. Apple has a refurb store (where I got both my MBP and iMac). I got the current generation MBP 13" for £850. Comes with the same one year warranty as brand new hardware. Then added the 3 year AppleCare for £200. So in all it was £1050. Whereas if I'd bought new and added the AppleCare it would have been £1200.

It's difficult to get discounts on Apple's prices so the best place to buy is usually airports. You can ring up in advance to pre-order and you'll not pay any VAT (17.5%, rising to 20% on 1st January).

Obviously this is only good if you know someone going abroad in the near future. :p

You don't have to be a student to purchase on the education stores. A parent or guardian can purchase on your behalf, providing you can provide proof that you are a student.

Equally, a friend can purchase a system for you, if they are in full time education / are a teacher etc.

Damn, both my parents are teachers - now retired! :( :D

But.. big sister is a primary school teacher and, of course, all primary school kids need a maxed out Mac Pro :D

As for new models coming out, the next generation of MacBook Pro maybe fairly different from the current lineup.

They could move to solid state storage like the macbook air, have lightpeak/usb 3, and the new intel processors.

Personally I would wait until they announce the next lineup.

I ordered a maxed out Mac Pro "for my uni work".. they didn't bat an eyelid.

Just because it's over-specced isn't to say you aren't entitled to it :D

6% for further education (College, sixth form etc)
14% for higher education (University etc)

There's also a 1 time developer discount of 21%, but you have to be a paying member of the ADC.

Great.

Does this apply to refurbs too ?

Ahh but that's the expensive developer account and not the $99 one.. so 3-499 and then you'll recoup that on a Mac Pro in the discount (from what I remember).

:D
