Any of the XDAs will do the job. Jdickerson is right in pointing out the S Mini. It's not as powerful as the larger XDAs but is a good size if you don't need the full size screen.

I like the IIi's (bit biased as i have one ;)) and i prefer them to the Exec especially looking at the price differences for them at the mo.

£50 will get you the Mini on contract, £150 for the exec. eBay have some good prices for other models at the moment, and remember T-Mob and Orange have their own versions.

Ive got an MDA Vario on T-Mob, and while it was prone to a few lock ups, putting the latest firmware on has improved this greatly. No soft resets for a few days.

freezing is definitely getting less and less, just make sure you update the rom/ software before you install all the programs you are after. Also put programs on memory card to leave you enough free memory.

Since I put the latest frimware on my mda compact not had any lockups for a week (heavy user for work)

At first mine locked up. Think i just played about with it too much and filled it up with junk. Like the guys said, use a SC card and it should be fine. I havent updated the firmware as i have had no need to, but i guess i've just been lucky with mine.
