Its been a few years since my last major rig overhaul, ive added the odd component since (more ram, ssd and graphics card etc.) but im starting to get that twitch as my once silent pc is now a lot louder as the fans are having to work overtime on the more recent games.

This is my current spec which is used for gaming mainly, with the odd bit of development.

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/LGA775)
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD 2560MB GDDR5
Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W ATX2.2 Modular SLi Compliant Power Supply
Coolermaster Storm 'Scout' Gaming Case
Samsung 840 Series Pro 256GB SSD
CORSAIR CMX12GX3M3A1600C9 12GB (3 x 4GB)

i currently run a dual monitor and trying to resist the idea of going for 3 in an eyefinity/surround setup.

i would be looking to spend £1000-£1200

Any thoughts? Ill be honest once i have a system built i don't tend to look at the movements in the cpu area for fear of bankrupting myself. what platform are intel on to now sandybridge or haswell?

I've just spent about £1000 on a new Haswell m-itx pc:

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclock ACX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (02G-P4-2774) £371.99

1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD250BW) £141.95
1 x ASRock H87M-ITX Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ITX Motherboard £89.99
1 x BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Cube Case - Passion Red £69.95

Total : £961.44 (includes shipping : £10.50).

BF3 and Far Cry 3 both on Ultra, everything maxed are running at 70-90fps@1080p and the pc is pretty much silent with stock cooling.

m-itx is not for everyone though.

thanks for the suggestions guys, interesting that the haswell cpu has appeared in all!
You're coming from an old enough CPU for the jump to be noticeable. Sandybridge/Ivybridge > Haswell isn't a massive step for what a new mobo and CPU would cost.

So far I'm really impressed with my Haswell both in terms of performance and the temperature it runs at.

Is Haswell really that big a jump in performance vs Nehalem? I have been considering the same move, but because of the line of work I'm in, I'm more likely to need the virtualisation from the -E variants. Just waiting out for IvyBridge-E

Well, its seems that as soon as i started making plans to replace my existing build it has started to BSOD (its probably the memory, so ill stick it on memtest).

But it just means I may have to accelerate my plans for an upgrade, for the time being however i may just replace the motherboard, cpu (with a cooler) and memory and upgrade the graphics card later in the year. i'm also quite fond of my current case (handle is exceptionally handy for lans).

possible CPU's

anyone recommend a heatsink for these? ive never really tried liquid cooling? not sure i want to start here :)

Motherboard
my last board was a giga and it has possibly been the best board ive had!

Then its a case of picking the ram, and deciding on if i want to go for 8gb or 16gb.
