Considering an iPad, but what uses?

I bought a 'Kensington KeyFolio Pro 2 Case, Keyboard and Stand for iPad Family' for my girlfriends ipad, it is an awesome case. Found it offers very good protection and the Bluetooth keyboard works really well, so well in fact that she now uses her ipad as a replacement for her laptop unless windows specific software is needed.

I thought about getting an iPad for quite a while before getting one, wish I had got one sooner.

Use it for watching videos/TV series, web browsing, FB and twitter, VNC, SSH, mail, news, reading books and then finally some games. Nothing better than playing Vice City on the way to work!

It's been delivered, I want to go home from work :(

I was looking at the M-Edge Trench Runner case but I still can't decide.

Apart from the Apple store are there any other high street stores where I could see a few cases?

Basically you'll find that instead of picking up the phone or going to your PC, you'll use the iPad instead. Which is great, because you don't particularly need to sit at a desk just to check something and you won't be using up the battery on your phone as much.

This, it'll make most other systems redundant, phone is now for phone calls, or when I'm out and haven't anticipated bordem. Desktop is for gaming and now some electronics programming, files and a few other things.

The longer you have it, the more you'll use it and the more you'll want to do with it. But you soon hit the brick wall with its limitations, which is extremely frustrating, it's a shame.

Yep, simple things like sending off cv's to employers is just a ball ache, seconds on the PC. But this ipad is used for everything else when browsing. YouTube, Iplayer, even gets used for rightmove app and booking.com app. Then games and to check email.

You do know you can add a bluetooth keyboard? ;)

Sure - but if I'm doing that I might as well just use my MacBook, which will be much less awkward and much more powerful.

I really can't say I see the benefits of browsing on an iPad compared to a laptop... not if you're in your house, anyway.

If u have a laptop an ipad is no real point.

If you only have a desktop then yeh go for it.

I use mine all day long. Have it tethered to my phone. Used 30mb of data all week so far

Have you even tried it?

It doesn't sound like it, I've got two laptops in my room, they never get used these days lol.

Heavy and awkward compared to just using a ipad and the battery on them lasts an hr or something before you have to charge it, I get 2 days out of my ipad with fairly heavy use. Everything can have it's place and everyone I know with an Ipad loves them, but then you have people selling them off because they find them too limited etc. each to their own :) oh and they are great for parents who ain't computer literate. My mum can use this thing and not mess anything up, should see her trying to use the laptop :/

My Macbook used to live in the living room, got an iPad at Xmas and now my Macbook sits on my desk in a vertical stand connected to a decent monitor for when I need to do something on a "Desktop" which isn't very often to be fair.

Yeah, my family have one, so I use it for browsing sometimes.

More than anything, I just find it annoying. Everything is slower than just using a laptop.

Web pages render slower (especially considering the ads, which you can't block unless you're jailbroken - that alone puts me right off it!) Typing is a massive chore. Even the little things like switching between tabs are just really tedious on an iPad compared to a computer with keyboard shortcuts.

Switching between tabs is tedious? You been on something? You touch the tab top of screen. How on earth is that tedious? Web pages render in seconds. Typing is of course slower I give you that, there are many valid arguments for why you would rather use a laptop, but you ain't putting them forward.

It's nowhere near as fast as using keyboard shortcuts on a laptop, e.g. Ctrl + [1-9] to select a specific tab.

Web pages render in seconds.

Sure, but substantially and noticeably slower than they do on a decent computer.

No where near as fast? lol. It's pretty much as fast as you move your hand, extend your finger and touch part of the screen. I'm not saying go out and buy yourself an ipad as they ain't for everyone, but your jumping on all the non issues.

It doesn't really need to turn into a 'which is better' argument, it's just whatever suits. If you do a lot of input or file management tasks then yes it will be a bit of a chore on the iPad.

I'd agree and disagree.

I have a 10" touchpad and after the novelty wore off (couple of months) I find the Air a much more capable machine to use for web browsing and every day computer stuff. Tablets are just too gimped, there is something to be said about a proper keyboard and touchpad. I'd be thinking totally differently if I had a bigger laptop however. I buy laptops for their portability and weight, something like your standard 15" laptop would definitely drive people towards browsing on a tablet.

However... As above, I have an Air but it's still to big for day trips out the house. I bought an iPad mini and it now goes almost everywhere with me. I use it daily on the commute to and from work, use it at my GF's house and if I feel like I'll need to do a bit of web browsing during a day out I'll take it as well. It's light, fits in a bag easily (or GF's purse/handbag), lasts for ages and is much nicer to browse than a 4" phone when you actually need to search and make decisions.

So to sum up... If you have a small laptop then a 10" tablet is pointless IMO, a light laptop is much easier and in situations you may have space for a 10" tablet you could get even more benefit out of a laptop. On the other hand if you commute/amble around a lot then a 7" tablet is definitely the way to go, it rarely gets used in the house but can be very useful out and about without any real weight/size issues (can be dropped into a jacket pocket in many cases).

EDIT: I actually bought my mini to take on holidays with me so I can browse/critique my photos as I take them, which is why I got the mini over the slightly smaller Android offerings (other than the others feel cheap and nasty, because they are cheap...).
