Considering an S5, other options?

The problem is the XF is totally opposite to what the OP has... tbh you'd probably get bored because it 'too safe'.

but then his list of requirements are the complete opposite of his current car too.

so on that basis the XF should be a good suggestion.

Wow, I can see how a thread can run away when I forget to post back. As stated in my first post I am tired of the Z4, not I thought it was something its not and am now disappointed, I knew full well what I was in for with the Z4. Its just now its a bit meh to be honest, its not really fun unless you thrash it, and it is not as effortless as its engine would suggest. Yes Fox I know you have access to convertible version and may debunk my claims but this is my opinion over 2 years of driving the coupe version. I am considering the S5 as its got driver select so you can dial down the damping when you want something slightly less on the edge, as the Z4 ALWAYS is. The interior is vastly superior, and thats not just my opinion, it has 4 seats (yes the 2 rear ones wont fit >6' people comfortably but there is atleast the option) the boot space is much bigger than the Z4, and only slighlty smaller than the 335i. I'll be honest I did consider a 335i before I bought the Z4, but found it dull, and very common, I cant say I have seem more than a dozen S5s in my travels over the past 2 years. And to those harping on about my comment on economy, was my op even read?? it clearly states fuel economy is not a big issue but nothing worst than the S5 will give, I have considered the jag but the interior was shocking, I was after something like the Audis, the only thing I have seem close is an Alfas, and I will never have another one of those, as across the range the brakes are dire. The CLS is not quite my cup of tea, as it looks ginormous.

On another note my tastes are quite random as I was up until 1 week ago considering a Disco 4, then dismissed it as a totally silly idea.

Ok so now I have elaborated, and pointed out glaring omissions on the parts of some people responses, any other recommendations would be welcome, oh and one more requirement 4WD.

hehe, yup I thought as much, just wanted to know if there were any others, too bad the 335xi is not available over here, as it would have been considered then, despite its bland interior.

I've fought through your massive wall of text - seriously, paragraphs man - but do you really think an S5 has a magic button that turns it into a beautifully comfortable cruiser?

It's an Audi, if it has two settings they will be 'ridiculously hard' and 'a little less ridiculously hard yet still a bit hard really'.

The 335i M Sport is hardly a 'common' car - I guess it does suffer slightly from the fact it looks the same as all the 320d M Sports out there.

And to those harping on about my comment on economy, was my op even read?? it clearly states fuel economy is not a big issue but nothing worst than the S5 will give,

It also clearly states:

the economy is terrible

If you think the Z4 economy was 'terrible' when its probably one of the most economical cars of its type, then it simply doesn't compute that you'd be happy with the consumption offered by an S5! To then insult the people who picked up on this is slightly daft. If economy isn't an issue why describe the economy in the Z4 as 'shocking' when comparatively speaking its nothing of the sort? The only time the economy in a Z4 is 'shocking' is when compared to a Ford Focus hatchback or something!

I have considered the jag but the interior was shocking

And there you go again with 'shocking'. How is the interior of an XF shocking? It is a stunning peice of design, I'm not really a Jaguar person but you've got to concede the interior of the XF is very nice indeed.

I was after something like the Audis, the only thing I have seem close is an Alfas, and I will never have another one of those,

What? How is ANY current production Alfa even remotely close to an Audi S5?

as across the range the brakes are dire.

Ooooookkkkk.......

The CLS is not quite my cup of tea, as it looks ginormous.

This is beginning to read like a 17 year olds 'Spec me a car' thread given the massively exagerated claims, the bizarre comparisons between different cars, strange ways of describing cars and the complete lack of paragraphing :p

On another note my tastes are quite random as I was up until 1 week ago considering a Disco 4, then dismissed it as a totally silly idea.

I can totally see why you'd be torn between a Discovery 4 and an Audi S5, very similar cars

Ok so now I have elaborated, and pointed out glaring omissions on the parts of some people responses,

Hahaha, awesome. The only glaring omission is any lack of sense in your posts :p

any other recommendations would be welcome, oh and one more requirement 4WD.

I think you should buy the S5. It's not the best car around, but you seem set on it to the extent that youve found all sorts of odd ways of dismissing everything else so its clearly the car you want.

Buy the S5 - but do so on the understanding it wont fix many of the problems with your current car, do so instead simply because you 'want one'.

Mind you it strikes me that buying just because you 'want one' is what led you to buy a car you currently hate, so meh.

One last thing - do please answer this even if you decide your next post to be some sort of huge miss-the-point-flame-fox-fest - which Audi S5 was it you were after?

Christ on a bike, I have witnessed it before but never in a thread I have made, you really do go above and beyond Fox, I will only answer the last question as anything I say will no doubt be over analysed and misinterpreted, no doubt this very post will and to be honest I am neither bothered enough to get upset or counter argue.

As my post states upto 35k I could only possibly be talking about the S5 coupe, and admit I made a mistake dismissing the XF confusing it with another cars interior, not sure which, yes I really did.

Ok, so presumably you realise that the S5's in budget will have the 4.2 litre FSI V8?

They deliver a combined fuel economy of 23mpg - compared with the 32mpg from 'shocking economy' Z4 3.0Si.

Have you considered a conventional A5 instead? The 3.2 FSI offers performance thats roughly comparable with your Z4 but considerably lower running costs and better fuel economy than you'd get from the S5 (It'll do 31mpg combined).

It is also available as an SE, meaning you'll get the better ride you are after as well.

It seems an A5 3.2 FSI SE Quattro might be the car you need, rather than the S5.

tbh i just think fox is being quite helful here, and is making a good point, i know someone who had a rs4 which (i think) has a s5 engine and he sold it as you cant get any economy out of it, i.e FUEL COSTS.
taking into account the 4wd thing your only really left with audi's and jap rally cars

I had throught about an S5 but went with the 335i in the end. My Wife did the same.

I did take the new 3.0 S4 out for a drive last week, it was not bad at all. I still dont know If I would have it over a 335i but its well worth taking a look at.
