Considering an upgrade

Hi guys,

I've never really had too many problems running games on my machine, even though it's a little old now, everything has run smoothly, most noteably I can run Half-Life 2 in maximum detail (although only 4x AA) and at a resolution of 1680 x 1050 so everything seemed fine.

... until I tried running a demo of some new Rally game from Eidos and it bought me back to the old days of when I tried running new games on my P133! This then also bought along the harsh realisation that Half-Life 2 is actually three or four years old, so for me to be using it as a benchmark is pretty ludicrous, regardless of how nice it looks. Anyway, my specs are as follows:

AMD Barton 2500+ (not overclocked)
Crucial 2x512MB DDR400
Asus V9999 GeForce 6800
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Antec Sonata Case and TruePower PSU
40GB Seagate Barracuda IDE HDD
160GB Seagate Barracuda IDE HDD
NEC DVD-RW
Sony DVD-RW

The main things that are bugging me are 1) Should I change now, or wait? and 2) Should I upgrade or get a whole new system?

I was at first considering keeping most of the base parts and just moving the motherboard, CPU, memory, graphics and 40GB hard drive into my parents case (they're using an AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz atm) but then I'm still not 100% sure on my other parts.

The case I'm assuming will be alright, which is good because it looks quite cool, has good mountings and actually does a good job of keeping my uber loud graphics fan under control at least a little, and the case fan is pretty much silent. Likewise with the DVD-RW drives, no problem there. Question is though, will the 160GB IDE drive be suitable for newer boards or would I need to get an improved one? Obviously to run Windows off I'd be looking at SATA or similar anyway, but I only need 40GB or so for that. Also, the PSU, I notice they've upgraded to TruePower 2.0 now but I'm not really aware of the difference between the newer version and my version.

Reading through, I guess it seems like I only want to 'upgrade' so I can keep my current case and PSU, which is maybe a little silly. I'm just not sure what the best thing to do is bah! Any suggestions would be fantastic, thank you!

xbox 360

keep pc for internet

i got a new pc about 6 months ago, now im saving for a 360 and HDTV cos the games line up is better.

You still havn't told us the ratings for your PSU. It is definately worth upgrading now; if you wait you can wait forever, if you see the need to upgrade - do it.

The IDE HDD will be fine but if you are getting a new one anyway get one with SATA2 and use the IDE HDD as a data drive.

NO! Don't! Don't become part of the demise of PC gaming! Be at the front of technology with PC's, not struggling alongside them once every 3 years with consoles! :p

Anyway now we've sorted that out ;)

I think you need to get yourself onto dual core - Intel at the moment. I think the best idea for your is to wait until the R600 comes out from ATI if that's going to be soonish, then you might find a cheaper CPU and DX10 graphics card. But if you don't want to wait, you can still buy a great system now - could you pump £700 or so into it? You should get a good setup with that :)

Yeah he's right with the waiting thing. If you decide you are gonna wait, make sure you only wait the once... or you'll be in a permanent " I'll just wait for X " loop :p

The PSU is only TruePower 380W but judging from reviews etc it's supposed to be a pretty good one, so will probably outperform some with a higher rating than that, but I'm not entirely sure.

I've no real budget, although anything I spend will be less money I have towards a house so I'm not really after spending money that I don't have to, if that makes sense! My computer runs pretty much every game I want to just fine for now anyway, so maybe waiting for that new card will be a good idea, cheers!

He didn't mention anything about consoles. I can see you endlessly telling people to go 360, so I'm gonna say now that I don't think you should. If someone asks for a PC upgrade, spec them a PC upgrade. Don't say "dont bother, get a 360" if they haven't even mentioned consoles. Personally, I'd never get a console over a PC, and if I came here asking for PC advice and got told to get a 360, I'd seriously doubt the credibility of the advice given here.

sorry if im being ratty, boring/unproductive day. probably could've said that nicer

I think it's a good option to consider; alas it's not for me! I've already got an Asus 22" Widescreen anyway, and will be definitely getting an Xbox 360 at some point this year along with a HDTV too, so whilst the suggestion to get a 360 is a good one, to get one instead of a PC is something I just can't consider unfortunately because I enjoy playing games that require a mouse too much!
