It might be worth experimenting more with the creative Z first. The reason there is a slider on the SBX surround option is because there is not a one size that fits all. Depending on the game, your headphones and your ears, you might get a better surround sound by trying various different levels.

Another thing to try is to change the the speaker setting to stereo in the windows control panel. Some people have had great success with this. And again try it with SBX off and SBX on.

Personally, I went from using "true" 5.1 headsets to a good stereo headphones and haven't looked back. Better sound quality and just as good positional audio. In fact I bought the stereo headphones to listen to music and was going to keep the 5.1 headset for games, but, after a week I sold them as they weren't been used.

But everyone is different. You might find "true" 5.1 headsets better than what you have.

Hi David
I'd had A pair of Coolermaster cm storm sirrus for around 2 years until the mic gave up on them. I never used them in conjunction with a dedicated sound card so can't comment on that. Having used them with the usb software via the tactical console [a big sturdy volume controller that allows you to control forward, rear, center & base, virtual speaker settings without collapsing the game.] you can control the 5.1 effect really easy .They're on the heavy side for wearing in long gaming sessions but you can change the ear pads which helped them feel a little fresher after a couple of hours.
I've also owned the Roccat kave's as well but found the Sirrus better quality.
After owning a couple of the 5.1 sets I decided to try a Stereo headset again & ended up buying the Qpad QH-90 which I think are great, will probably now up grade to the Qpad QH-1339 thats how impressed I've been with them.
Boy's & there Toys eh :D:D

Out of interest did you ever get your CM Storm Sirus headset? Thought this was a very interesting post and whilst I'm not expecting the 5.1 solution to 'win out' this got my interest (used to have the AX Pro's before my current ZxR (was a Phoebus) and 598 set-up on PC).

Maybe my hearing is crappy, but I couldn't really get the positional stuff out of a set of 5.1 cans (Roccat). It sounded little different to virtual 5.1.

The Roccats are okay, but the volume dialler never worked right and they are HEAVY.

Not yet sadly -- but I think the CM Sirus was the best of that type of product that I found from some quite extensive research.

Currently, I'm buying closed-back stereo headphones due to noise complaints in the household!

I still intent to test-out a 'true' 5.1/7.1 headset one day though. It's something I'm still curious about -- although I think I'll have to put it on the back-burner for the time being.

PS:

Your current combo (Creative SB Z + Senn HD598) is really good for FPS (and all types of) gaming in my opinion. (From a positional awareness perspective.)

Cheers for the response. Sure I'll notice if you ever do post an update, and as you mention I'm not likely to replace my setup, but curious at this post.
