Hi,
I'm looking at getting a PS3, mostly as a blu-ray player but also occasional gaming. I haven't bought or used a console in several years and have not really been following their development so before I make up my mind, I have a few questions.

1: At the moment, I don't have a HDTV, but do have a monitor with DVI port, would this be OK to use?

2: I have a PSP with a few games I have downloaded from the PS Network, would I be able to transfer my purchases over to my PS3?

3: If you could only buy one game and one blu-ray disc to use, which would you get?:)

Any advice/tips/recommendations appreciated.

Thanks.

yea. youd need a hdmi - dvi cable i think. although the monitor needs to be hdcp compliant IIRC

2: I have a PSP with a few games I have downloaded from the PS Network, would I be able to transfer my purchases over to my PS3?
yea. should just be able to log into the account you already use on the psp through the ps3

3: If you could only buy one game and one blu-ray disc to use, which would you get?:)
personally, planet earth + metal gear solid 4 , depends what genres of films/games you like though. something like fifa that lasts a while might be better. or MW2 , uncharted 2 etc. i just think metal gear is a game everybody should play. and its only 15quid thesedays

Any advice/tips/recommendations appreciated.

Thanks.

Band of brothers in 1080p is brilliant and can be had for under £20 online at the moment!

I have played a few ps3 games but tbh I am catching up with the FF series so the only thing my ps3 is used for right now is iplayer and FF10.

Brother has unchartered one and said its good. MW2 is good but unless you play online it is very short lived (even though it is very good).

Game: Modern Warfare 2 (but only if you go online).

Blu-ray: Well, if you haven't watched Dark Knight, it is a brilliant film and I thought it looked brilliant on Blu-ray... actually, i'm gonna go watch it now :P

Thanks for the advice. I'm almost convinced, just having trouble finding out if my monitor is HDCP compliant.
Anyone use a PS3 with a Viewsonic VP191?
Cheers.

For Blu-Ray movies, in terms of picture quality, see here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342

A lot of the best ones are CGI/Animated features, but from the Tier 0 list, for a Live acted film, my favourite is probably "Man on Fire", great film, even better on Blu-Ray.

Gameswise, most who have played "Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves" would easily place it in the top 3 games this generation.

Ahh, what a ballache!

According to this it should work, but I don't want to risk buying one and not being able to use it:(

Just had another thought too. Is there a mic/speaker socket on the PS3? Been so busy thinking about the video, I forgot about the sound!:)

I had the same sound issue to in my thread

I hooked up my ps3 to my monitor with a HDMI-DVI cable and then used my multi AV connector and bought an adapter off the bay(for under £2) a 3.5mm stereo jack to 2 X RCA phono adapter and just plugged the two audio cables into this and put this into my speakers and i had sound. :)
I did have to change a setting on the ps3 for dual output or audio or something like that.Cant remember off the top of my head.

Good luck. The only problem i have is that it tries to display at a different resolution. It looks fine but i just have to press a button on my monitor to get rid of the message.A little annoying but worth it so i can have my ps3 with my monitor :)
