So my contracts up with BT, shopping around plus net is looking the best value with quidco.

currently im on 80/20 with BT, but actually only get 49/17. which is my min guaranteed speed. Use to be near 60 back in the day.

so this is currently £49.99, going up to 53.99 from nov according to my contract.

Plus net £33.50, £25 activation, £95 quidco.

trouble is few people are warning me off plusnet, so just wanted thoughts?

thanks

Aren't Plusnet now a subsidiary of BT? Since they all run off BT lines, you're not going to get any more speed.

They are indeed a subsidiary. I had nothing but trouble with them, huge queues on the phone with staff who clearly hated every call.

Even tried to charge me a £30 leaving fee.

I'm probably an unlucky user as other people have no issues :p

Like many other companies they have a terrible rep on Trustpilot.

Can't fault them, although I've never used the supplied router, used my own.

Did the same move from BT, because cheaper.

I worked for plusnet and honestly 90% of the calls i got was issues with the router. With over 50% of the time it being Wifi related. Their supplied router was pants for WiFi. Technicolor and the rest can't remember all the models. Plusnet even provide for Waitrose and Johnlewis too but those routers was much better ZyXEL routers i beleive.
Most of the time switching channels resolved or helped the issue. Moral of the story is use your own router not the cheapo one they supply to get you online.

FTTC from any provider is essentially the same basic product, the main differentiators are price, the hardware supplied and the quality of service on the other end of the phone, a few run different profiles though, so check before signing up.

If you have your own hardware and a stable line, then it generally comes down to who has the best deal when combined with Quidco/TCB. BT offer 52/10, PN used to do 38/10 but moved to 38/2 to save a few quid, not sure if that's changed again, but check if you value upload speed.

Could I pick your brains? Do Plusnet close any ports.

I know they swear they don't, however I run a home webserver that was taking an FTP feed over port 21. Suddenly one day I lost the ability to upload FTP files to the server. I had lots of discussion on their forum, however it was never resolved.

The reason I lost FTP was either a windows update, or some change that happened in Plusnet blocking a port, however I never actually resolved it, just wondered if you knew about anything on Plusnet side that could have effected this.

Been with Plusnet a few years now on the 80/20 unlimited or whatever it is these days. Have a "static" IP and run a web/mail server and various other stuff with no issues at all. They have been absolutely flawless for me. Using my own router though, as mentioned above. Didn't even bother getting theirs out of the box.

Honestly i don't know mate. It's not something they really covered but they usually tell everyone via a company wide email if anything changes which affects any customers any way and blocking ports or any ports never was mentioned. But personally i don't think they do. Are you accessing your webserver from the intranet or internet? As in using world wide web to access and upload files via FTP or are you doing this on your WAN? Intranet?
For instance mad as a fish one of plusnet's subsidiaries was closing down broadband and phone services and moving it all over to plusnet. They had to make customers aware of this many months in advance including us(Staff) and people who wished to keep their email domains had to pay a 1 off fee. Stuff like this we got informed of all the time. Closing ports never was mentioned to me or came up as a problem on one of my calls.
