Considering my first console in over 10 years

Considering how much time I've spent gaming in my life, I suppose I am fairly unusual in that I've never owned a console more modern than the SNES/Megadrive. Most gamers, even those who don't currently own a console, will have at some point had one from the Saturn/N64/PSX generation, or possibly something more recent like Xbox/PS2/GC.

However, I am quite intrigued by this new Wii from Nintendo. It has taken a different approach from the tried and tested route and created a relatively innovative control system. My gf's brother has one and having played on it briefly, we've decided we want to get one. The graphics aren't anything to write home about, the control system can be frustrating and I certainly wouldn't want to use it for 'serious' play, but Nintendo have somehow managed to make it all rather fun. It's quirky and even my gf (who's lifetime gaming experiences extend about as far as Solotaire and Carol Vorderman's Sudoku) is keen on the idea - heck, she even beat me at bowling ffs!

Of course, this isn't another of those "I'm bored with PC gaming" type posts I see spring up from time to time. I certainly don't fall into that category and the majority of my gaming time will still be dedicated to the versatile and graphically supreme PC. It's just that maybe the time has come to.... chill out a bit, take gaming a little less seriously at times and diversify into something I can enjoy with my partner.

The only problem now is trying to actually find one for sale - no luck so far.

So, any other console exiles coming in from the cold? Or have I just been missing out all these years?

Did the same thing myself last feb. I just needed to chill out gaming instead of sitting upright with a KB and M 2 or 3 feet from a monitor. Its nice to be able to relax and be some distance from a bigger screen.

I didnt intend on ditching pc gaming, it just happened.

If it's getting your partner involved then the Wii is the right console.

While not explicitly marketed as a sex toy or masturbatory aid, it has reportedly enjoyed success in that area

Lol...

The OP could buy an older console such as a PS2 dead cheap now, plenty of games you've been missing out on!

It sounds like you're a victim of Nintendo's evil plan to draw everyone into its world of fun :D I'd say the Wii really is worth hunting down but as a non console gamer, the PS2 has a huge library you'll have missed out on (I'd say the best ones require some serious gaming time though). You'll also be able to play any Playstation game on the PS2. The same goes for the Wii with Gamecube games.. theres the whole virtual console thing too.

Might now be exiled for as long as you but I haven't had a console since the PSOne, the damn problem is the limited stock of the wii :(

I was a console exile for years - I've always been a PC gamer but the 360 with its HDTV visuals and plug and play simplicity has seen my PC decline into a glorified email and Internet machine. So much so, that I'm probably spending my last day on it today before dismantling it all and flogging its innards.

A Macbook and Xbox is the perfect combo for me. :D

If you are trying to get a non gamer to play on one, the Wii is the best choice by far. At Xmas we had my lass, my brothers lass, my lass' parents and grandparents all playing on the Wii. Even better, I picked up a copy of Donkey Konga for the Gamecube which runs on the Wii and we had an absolute ball.

If you are looking for novel entertainment, Nintendo does it best.

The shop that resembles a rainforest gets a stock of wii daily but you have to be online at the right time because they usually sell out in about 4 minutes. My mate was lucky though & ordered one from them friday, it arrived saturday

I'm pretty much the same as Danny. I didn't mean to stop playing my PC, but the whole experience on my 360 has led to it not being turned on for almost a year. I used my wireless laptop for tinternet, but my main PC is just doing nothing. Cost a bloody fortune too!

I own a top end PC, 360 with lots stuff, HD screen and Wii, for gaming fun the wii wins out, tennis is so much fun and keeps me fit n healthy!, but then gears war is jus gaming bliss, if can afford get 3 things for different things they offer. Right now my gaming time is split 60%ish playin company heroes on pc (pc CANNOT be beaten for strategy games), and Wii playin sports and zelda, will get back to the 360 when have time :D
