Considering Ryzen 7 1700 (oc) from i7 4770k @ 4.2ghz.

The 1800X has TDP 95 watts. The non overclocked 1700 has TDP 65 watts. When overclocked, the 1700 will have around the same TDP as a non overclocked 1800X, so it's surprising that VRMs are the limiting factor.

No its not surprising as the oc 1700 at 4G is pulling around 300 watts from the wall just for a loaded cpu..running r15.

I'd never buy a cheapo budget board. But on the other hand, i think these 300 quid boards are a waste of money. You're paying for branding and silly lights. I'd never pay more than £150.

My Asrock gaming k6 is an excellent board with all the features i need for a very reasonable £135. Why would i need to spend more?

Exactly the same for me. Spending £250+ on a motherboard just seems silly to me. In fact the most I have ever spent on a mother board is £140ish, a gigabyte UD3 AM3+ for my fx8350. Had all the features and ports I could ever need that was out at the time.
I'm waiting for a similar priced motherboard before I take the plunge on RYZEN possibly the 1600x or the 1700 depending on gaming benchmarks

I'm highly suspecting it to all be the same thing but binning the chips.
