hi, i am considering an upgrade to dual core, in my final year of University my CPU is taking ages to do rendering in lightwave and also seeing that it struggles in some new games out now. I have around £250 but depending on what i can get for the hardware which will not be used in the upgraded machine i can sell! which will bump the price up enough for a good upgrade i hope. The Machine is mainly used for rendering but a lot of gaming aswell! my machine is all currently cooled via water but the CPU block can be modified to fit other sockets.

Current System:

CPU: AMD 3500 running just under 2.5Ghz
GPU: ATI 1900xt
MOBO: ASUS A8R-MVP
RAM: GeIL 2gb Value
PSU: Seasonic S12 600W Silent ATX2.0

I was thinking of going with a E6300 cpu and really want to keep with 2gb of ram aswell, i will be overclocking aswell so (fingers crossed) the 6300 will be running a lot quicker, im not to clued up on these Intel setups as i have used AMD for many years now. please advise :)

ok what are those 3800 x2 like for overclocking/ approx? would i be looking around 2.5 from seeing other peoples clocks . . . . also would i notice a nice jump in speed? if so then this would be ideal because my current computer has no case  so could afford one then and save for DX10 machine afor end of year?

That is actually a bloody good price. Could buy a good new case with what you get from selling your other stuff, then just upgrade the graphics card later and maybe add another 1GB.

hmmm problem is im really not wanting to go with 1gb, correct me if im wrong, but with high poly count and lost of textures im using in Lightwave plus to good old bf 2142 i thought u really need 2gb . . . . . . . is the amd x2 upgrade not going to make much difference?

Yeah tbh 1GB is a bit of a setback. The 2x3800 will give you a noticable increase in performance.

lol @ me being indecisive.

lol, well i was just looking through all my junk in my house and noticed i have a Vibe black air 1200watt sub which might put the price up a bit more :) just have to look on where to sell it :(

thanks anyway guys

after having a look around i have decided to go with the E6300

i have also seen some ram, problem is its only in 512 modules, if im looking into overclocking this cpu will having 4 modules not give me best clock achiveable?

the ram im looking at is : OCZ 512mb DDR2 800 CL5.0 DUAL CHANNEL SPECIAL OPS EDITION

it comes pckaged in pairs aswell

or should i spend an extra £20 and get this instead: OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

or can anyone else recommend me the best 2gb RAM i can get for £120ish thanks
