I bought a PS5 last year basically on impulse because it was available. Since then, I've been so impressed that I sold my 3080 and am gaming exclusively on PS5. As it's paired with a 4k OLED with VRR it might be the combination of tech that's made the difference, but I honestly think the console is the better option for me.

It just works. I especially like that I can put it into rest mode and come back later to resume exactly where I left off. I don't need to mess about with any settings, OLED just works as it should. 4k looks great, VRR works fine.

Has anyone else been converted from the Master Race?

Nope not converted, Been a console gamer Since PS1. I now had an awesome PC, Series X, PS5 and switch. love them all :) and they all get use, sometimes one may go for a few months without but I can't miss out on cracking gaming experiences.

Currently playing.
PS5 - Elden ring and HFW, BF2042
Series X - Yori
PC - BF2042, Anno 1800, The Forest
Switch - Just bought Witcher 3 to replay whilst I holiday in France

It’s ok for exclusive games and even then it can be quite bad.
Horizon Forbidden West for example when run at 60fps looks very bad with horrible shimmering and resolution dropping at times so low it looks sub 1080p.
VRR while works is limited to 48hz with no low frame rate compensation and very few games use it correctly at the moment.
Oh and you can put your PC to sleep as well while a game is running.

With rising energy prices the PS5 or Xbox will be cheaper to run for sure, plus most games will be optimised for console's so yea seems a good choice, get yourself a little Mac mini for browsing. the new M1 mini's are very low power. after a year the lower power use will most likely pay for it.

Nothing wrong with consoles at all, it's what I grew up playing and works well - The consoles of this gen seem very capable, but two issues:

1. Cost of games (Offset by cost of PC, but as it serves double duty for working from home, situation dependent)
2. Type of games. Strategy games are nowhere near as intuitive, and play so much better on a PC. I'm not just talking about using a mouse and keyboard, but also having a processor which is just a much higher quality and runs things more snappily.

I'm quite out of the console loop and haven't had one of the newer gen consoles though, so is my last point now not so much an issue?

I ended up going the other way. I lost love of couch gaming and much prefer gaming in my office with a screen much closer to me.

Sold the PS5 after getting a 6900XT.

I'd agree, but it can be quite solitary. This is fine if you have time really delve into a good game, but I tend to feel a bit guilty as my wife might not see me for quite a while. Bet she doesn't mind really...

Playing games like Horizon Zero Dawn worked well on a sofa as Mrs Turnip also enjoyed watching it, but wouldn't play it herself.

I'd normally list split screen as quite a cool feature of console games back in the day, but that seems to have died out to a degree. Struggle to feel like I'm playing with a real person when all I have is a headset and a mic, I find the connection is lost.

Nowadays, I think PC gaming is still a more flexible way forward, but nothing wrong with consoles, especially as mouse and keyboard seems to be supported too.

I run HFW with the other option which I think drops the resolution to 1440 and keeps the frame rate higher and smoother. I think I've started to get used to the lower resolution which is probably another factor.

no i would never convert as i hate using a controller

I only use controller. I know, sorry.
During the PS3 era was almost exclusively playing only on the PS3. PS4 bought on preorder, sold 6 months later, played about 20 hours.
PS5 bought a year ago, really like it. Played Demon Souls end to end 3 times, started with Elden Rings but had to stop as I’m quite busy lately.
But this time I’m playing on the PC too.
My main issue now is the lack of time. No kids, but still, always something to do.
As others mentioned, of the focus is only gaming, considering the price of GPUs lately, at least high end, many would settle for a videogame. One thing that stops a bigger migration is the lack of support for keyboard + mouse that many won’t give up. Graphic performance, many would adapt. Don’t believe everyone plays at 4K Ultra 120+ fps.
But as many here use PC for work, adding a GPU makes sense.

I still rock both, but mainly play my Xbox as my friends are mostly on this platform.

If I could sell my pc with the pain of splitting it, it would be gone tbh

Not sure I've been converted but I definitely play more on consoles over the last few years (since PS4 Pro/One X) than I do PC. I have always tended to own consoles for exclusives but the increasing costs of PC components has been a factor in pushing me to consoles again. Although my newish PC is fine for the odd older games I play atm so I'm not locked out of PC gaming. The PS5 is my most recent purchase and it's hard not to be more impressed with it as a whole. The Dualsense and Astro's Play Room really standing out for me. That said also seeing Fallout 3 for the first time in years on Series X (4K and 60fps) was a pretty 'wow' moment.

That's the main reason I haven't switched to console. The other major reason is mods. I play single player games and mods make a lot of difference. Something you dislike about the UI? There'll be a mod for that. Something you dislike about a single game mechanic that blights the otherwise great game for you? There'll be a mod for that. More content? There'll be a mod for that. A complete overhaul mod that significantly changes the game? Probably a mod for that too.

I'm definitely tempted. Consoles are far better value for money for gaming and my PC is old now and Microsoft's incessant drive towards ever more spyware and remote control annoys me. I'm tempted to get a console for gaming and switch to Linux for my PC for everything else. But I can't game on controller (issues with one thumb) and I'd really miss mods. So I'm still undecided. Maybe I'll go one more round on the dGPU upgrade merry-go-round and then switch to a console. Maybe.

Cheaper option just buy a cheap controller for your PC then you can see whether its suitable and also will be cheaper than buying a console only to find out you made a mistake ;)

I thought I had been clear when I wrote "I can't game on controller (issues with one thumb)". I didn't write "I think that a controller might be a problem for me but I've never used one so I really don't have any idea and I'm just guessing wildly with no evidence".

Take a chill pill, you seem in a right mood tonight

Would love to get some tips on using a controller for FPS games. Lad had a Series X about 12 months ago. Have downloaded all my old FPS games through game pass (Battlefield mainly but a bit of Warzone too). Cannot for the life of me get used to the controller else would convert to a console.

Have for so used to Keyboard and Mouse and just can't seem to get the muscle memory for a controller at all.

Such a shame as it's a great console.
