Console Game of the Year (Nominations)

When do you think the cutoff will be for nominations?

I have Uncharted to finish and Mass Effect to start (this week), both are serious contenders.

(I will edit this post and make it my nomination post later so it doesn't mess up your thread).

rp2000

I'll leave it open a couple of weeks and I'll give a notice a couple of days before I close it so no rush. ~ People are free to change their minds (and posts) before this.

Mass Effect
Mario Galaxy
Halo 3

Isn't Orange Box a bit of a controversial entry since a large portion of it contains a 2005 game (and 2006 expansion).

Mario Galaxy
COD4
MP3

id like to say Bioshock, but the fact is, halfway into the game it all started to feel like a chore plus the lack of replay value lets it down

Bioshock. My favourite game this year followed by CoD 4(although only played that on PC)

I'll say Mass Effect was good, but I was for the first time ever majorly dissapointed, I usually never get myself all hyped up but this time I did and for me it didn't deliver. I'd still have it up there for the good story and good cinematic experience, but for gameplay and lack of variety on the side quests it was a chore to play in the end for myself which is just unfortunate for myself as everyone else seems to be really enjoying it.

I'll also say however that I really enjoyed playing Assassins Creed even though it has the same problems with side quests, although the more freedom of the engine made them slightly more enjoyable. And the technical achievements of that game were simply amazing.

So just to clear that up...

Bioshock
CoD4
Assassins Creed

In no particular order....

1) Bioshock - Completely immersive game that hooked me from start to finish. Thanks to the Plasmids and Tonics there are many ways you can approach any fight, and the world of Rapture was completely believable and just sucked you in. I completed it in a weekend as I simply couldn't put it down.

2) Call of Duty 4 - brilliant single player experience, but easily the multiplayer game of the year in my eyes. The perk system is great and a wonderful way to customise the experience to your own liking. I'll still be playing this online in 6 months easily, a sign of a truly great MP game.

3) Mass Effect - not completed it, but so far it's an amazing game. Incredible detail, voince acting and visuals combine to make this a must play game, whether you're an RPG fan or not. The fact the combat is real time makes it feel less RPG than action game, a welcome change from the turn based combat we usually get.

If I had to pick one, Bioshock would get it currently, but that may well change by the time I've finished Mass Effect.

would prefer to see this split into the different console categories really..otherwise its hopelessly biased. Because based on pure numbers an average x360 game will easily beat a brilliant game on the ps3 e.g. Uncharted Drakes Fortune. (im assuming the OP is going to base the short list on the "amount of times" the game gets a mention)

Heavenly Sword
Uncharted Drakes Fortune
Ratchet and Clank

biggest dissapointment: Bioshock - extremely repetitive, boxey gameplay - only completed it for the story.

I can't think of 3. I haven't played CoD4 yet (on my Christmas list), but to me, Bioshock is the only one worthy. Brilliant in every way. The story, characters, graphics, atmosphere, art direction and action were simply the best.

As much as I like Mass Effect, it has average combat, terrible frame rate issues (albeit not when it matters most thankfully) and just feels like it was rushed out for Christmas.

Just my 2p.

EDIT: But let my rant of Mass Effect put anyone off. It is great fun and I am enjoying it :) Maybe I'll rate it higher when I get further in.
EDIT 2: I had forgot Crackdown was released this year. That could be my second nomination.

seeing as I make myself be a few months behind so I can get the games cheaper these are my GOTY so far

Mind you thinking about it now I can't think what games have come out!

Sports : SKATE - absolutely brilliant from an old skateboarders point of view, even if you don't skate I think people were getting sick of Tony Hawks, I did after 3

Orange Box : Purely for value, have yet to get my teeth into ep 1 and 2 but enjoyed the rest of the experience

Did Gears of War come out this year , if it did then I'll have that

Biggest dissapointment's -
Pes 2008, completely ruined a great game
Halo 3- way to much hype for a completly mediorce game imo

Just to be controversial, I'll say...

God of War II
Assassins Creed
Orange Box

I would nominate SWOS, but it's not out yet. :p
