Hello,
The last console I owned was the first version of the sega master system and I bought that second hand when I was about 12.
Ever since then I have not owned a console but I really want to get one now to play GTA4.
I dont know what to get, an Xbox 360 (of which there are different versions?) or a PS3.
can anyone give me some guidance please? :(
Thanks,
Jon

Christ lol, another which console thread! :D

(I still love you)

Id say get an xbox 360 mate, better control (imo), better multiplayer (although you do pay for it), but as loud as anything. Also cheaper than ps3 and has downloadable content.

Best value for money console is the PS3 though, but best game console (atm) is the 360 :)

P.S have a guess which console I own :D

It really really depends upon what else you want from the console. It's going to work out cheaper to go for the 360 option with either of the 3 console types out there. Take a look at the following for a good comparison of the types of 360 available:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360#Comparison_of_features

I'd personally go for at least the premium, as it comes with the HDD for more space to download demos etc out of the box.

The advantage of the 360 version is that in the future, exclusive GTAIV content is going to be released over Xbox Live (at a cost), and if you want that kind of stuff, then the Xbox will likely be the better option.

Have a look at the types of games out on both systems. In my view personally, the Xbox 360 still has a much much better lineup of games available, and there still aren't enough games out on the PS3 that take my fancy enough to warrent its still relatively high cost.

Thanks guys.
Do you have to pay to use the live facility on the 360 then?!
Cheers
Jon

Theres 2 memberships for live - silver and gold.

Silver means that you can download demos, chat to friends, see whos online, download films and xbox 1 games(at a cost)

Gold mean you can do all of the above plus play multiplayer. And guess which one you pay for :)

For the basic service (Xbox Live Silver) to download things like demos, no. You do have to pay however if you want to play games online (Xbox Live Gold). To cost varies from about £20-35 per year depending upon where you manage to get a voucher for it. You do get a free month of Xbox Live Gold when you get your Xbox so you get a good chance to try it out. Then at the end of the month you can either commit to getting a year subscrition or just revert your account to Xbox Live Silver.

There are other things like special downloadable content you need to pay separately for also.

Thanks
So looking at the specs. The premium unit is the same as the elite, just with a smaller hard drive, and its black
am I Correct?
Thanks,

Pretty much. The Elite also comes with a HDMI cable and a dongle for Audio. All new consoles come with HDMI ports. It will depend upon what type of TV you'll be running it on (or PC monitor)

Thanks again, quick good replies.
Im going to plug it into my crt tv, but when i get an LCD unit it will go into there. Can you plug a 360 into a tft pc monitor? via VGA or dvi ?
Thanks,
Jon

You can buy a £3.50 hdmi cable and mod your component cable to allow optical output with hdmi, emulating the hdmi dongle.

I've not read much in to the HDMI side of things, but is it not possible to simply plug the HDMI and the component in and just plug the audio in to the component cable and video for HDMI? Or do you need to trick the 360 in to thinking that the component cable is just an audio dongle with the mod? And does the mod leave the component cable useless as a component cable afterwards? (Just curious :))

If you plan on using a PC TFT monitor, you can plug it in with the Xbox 360 VGA cable. You can also use a DVI => HDMI convertor to plug your 360 in to the DVI port, I can't remember if your DVI port needs to be HDCP enabled for it to work over DVI, somebody can correct me for that.

Depending on how long you're planning on plugging in the console in to an old CRT TV, I would recommend investing in the Xbox 360 Advanced AV Cable, which will give the best picture on an older Standard Definition TV using its RGB output.

i just bought a ps3 seems more logical buy if already have a gaming pc.

well impressed with it. media streaming side if good and its Blu-ray

I would go for the 360, simply because with the money left over you can get quite a few games, however if its the Media capability your after then the PS3 is worth a shot.

Their are quite a lot of good deals going around at the moment so i would have a browse around before you make up your mind.
