Console newbie - advice please ps3 or xbox 360

I've not read much in to the HDMI side of things, but is it not possible to simply plug the HDMI and the component in and just plug the audio in to the component cable and video for HDMI?

Yup.

You just remove the plastic grey shell from the component cable so they can both fit.

I was in the same predicament as you when i was looking to buy a console before crimbo.
Right now 360 is a better games console, but the ps3 has good games. PS3 has some good exclusives on the horizon too. The best 360 titles tend to be more mainstream games, this aint a bad thing but if you prefer other types of games or get sick of these games id recomend a ps3.

If you want a hd media player aswell as a games console ps3 is hardly a compromise.

For me the biggest factor by far was which console did my mates have, when they are on i play for ages with them its such good fun. And when they arnt its really boring and theres no competitiveness.

But he goes on to say that PS3 has good games (which I assumed meant better games)

Not really, sounds more like he was saying the 360 has better and more games (which arguably it does, if that's what he meant by better games console) but the PS3 also has good games. (which again, arguably it does) :)

For pure gaming and big list of AA titles already out with exellent online get a 360 elite , for gaming and movies i.e blu ray a ps3 is the one and i believe that the ps3 will start to get more top games for it over the next year or so .

Jihads right thats what i meant. 360 has more games that are better, but ps3 doesnt have a bad collection of games right now, considering its not been out aslong and its harder to develop/code for. I reckon in a few years the collection of games for it will improve, but that depends on your taste for games. 360 is aimed more towards americans and ps3 is aimed for more the asian market. This is apparent with the games out for it.

I really wouldnt recomend an elite. Youd be better saving your money saved from buying a premium towards some games or whatever or buying a ps3 for a bluray player or even a hd screen.

Look at the exclusive games of each console atm and coming in the future. Decide which of them you like and would like to play and then get the console which has them. Simple as that.

If you think having Blu Ray is important to you NOW, then maybe you will lean more towards the PS3 but never say never that a Blu Ray version of the Xbox will come out.

In the end, they both are great consoles, but if the reason your buying them is to play games (why else?) then go for whichever has the games you want to play.

have a look at which console's exclusive games you like more. if games ain't the number 1 priority then ps3 pretty much wins because of it has blu-ray, near silent, media machine, internet browser, built in wireless (internet and media streaming), no internet subscription.

saying that though, ps3 wins for exclusive titles for me personally too (metal gear solid, final fantasy)

also what someone mentioned about 360 aimed for americans (fps) and ps3 (rpg's, beat em ups) aimed for asian market is pretty much true, though there are some cross overs of course.

I THINK im looking at an xbox premium or arcade + buy a seperate hard drive.
Would I be right in thinking the arcade (apart from the missing hard drive) is a slightly "better" console (reliability wise)? Im sure i read somewhere it had less chance of the issues with the general hardware failure?

they're all based on the same hardware as of october 2007 (iirc) so the premium should be equally as reliable. the premium on it's own can be picked up for £180 brand new on the highstreet, not to sure about online as i want to make sure i get the newest revision

I've got both consoles, and prefer 360. It's got more good games, and i REALLY hate that ancient 1995 PS3 controller design, and your fingers are always slipping off the retarded trigger buttons that have just been dumped on a controller that was not originally intended for such things (same with analog sticks).

With i could use my 360 controllers on PS3.
