Console performance vs PCs over time

PS5 is around 10 teraflops. Not even as powerful as a 3 year old 1080Ti. The days of consoles being more powerful than PC’s at launch are over.

new Xbox is 12, so midway between a 1080Ti and a 2080Ti.

Does not always work that way looking at teraflops alone. RX Vega 64 in terms of teraflops is actually close to the 2080Ti and well ahead of the 1080Ti, yet in terms of actual FPS benchmarks and what have you, well results speak for themselves. Sure when comparing similar architectures it may provide a reference point, but otherwise not so much. Do not mistake me though, I suspect the 2080Ti will have more raw performance, but looking simply at teraflops does not tell the whole picture.

Not sure comparing consoles to the flagship card is a fair test :D. Be interesting to see more 'normal cards I.e. x70's and 80's. I always thought the ps3 was more powerful than the Xbox 360 and that the 360 was roughly a 7800gtx.

Here's a more modern version:

WOW  i didn't realise my xbox one X was so slow..It only about the speed of a 980ti :(:(:(

But then again i guess that pretty good for a console that came out around 2 1/2 to 3 years ago

Yes, but the specialisation of consoles closes the gap to some extent. Then there's the issue of DRM on PCs, which can cut performance significantly. The gap isn't as big as peak graphical processing performance implies.

I recently watched a vid about the new xbox and how it compares to a current PC I don't remember the specifics completely but its something like 12 teraflops of GPU power and an NVMe SSD with transfer speeds of up to 7gb a second. They decided to build PC with as close as they could to the specs and they needed a 2080ti 9900k etc and the total wasnt far off 2 grand, So you're getting a 2 grand PC that plays UHD blu rays, has HDMI 2.1, is capable of 8k rez and games that seem to be targeting 4k at 120hz. How in the hell are they going to be able to sell that for 500 quid and could this thing finally be the one that has a lot of fed up PC gamers making the switch? especially when you consider the price of things like a 2080ti.

Consoles are usually sold at cost or even at a loss because the profit is in games and services, not the consoles. In addition, all modern consoles use PC parts or cut-down cheaper versions of PC parts so development costs are minimal. The whole R&D cost is placed on PCs. So maybe console gamers should pay a tax to PC gamers, since it's PC gamers who make consoles possible at a lower price :)

Also, I wouldn't trust some random vid you can't remember and some specs you can't remember. Bit short on details and checking there. I've just done some very quick checking and you're way out on SSD speed (it's claimed to be up to 2.4GBps, not 7) and resolution/fps (it's claimed to be 4K at 60fps, not 120). Graphics are handled by midrange in the next gen of AMD cards, which should be a fair bit cheaper than a 2080Ti when it's released. The next gen of consoles will be very high spec for the price, that's for sure.

The main reason I game on PC isn't performance. It's a mouse and keyboard and a mostly open system. For the time being, anyway.

LOL, console peasants.

'But muh exclusive titles!'

I dunno how to read this. Is the console peasants bit sarcasm or are you mocking people who praise consoles?

Never understood platform fanboyism. I could maybe expect it from a 12yr old who's parents bought them something they want to defend but any reasonable person would see that all options have positive sides.

The exclusives comment is perfectly valid. The PC doesn't get AAA exclusives. Consoles also offer a more inclusive experience for times when the missus doesnt want to just see the back of your head, staring at a monitor with your headphones in.

My Gtx 1080 spec pc has been great for about 4 years which has meant I've had money to buy consoles whenever I saw fit and just enjoy best of both worlds.

It's just a lighthearted dig at hardcore console fanbois, no need to take it so seriously. :)

Soon, when the PS5 and XBoxSx launch the console peasants will rise to take their rightful place as the glorious console gaming master race (until the PCMR spend £1000+ on a new video card at least.....)

;)

I think that’ll ultimately sway my decision. I’d love to replace the 980ti but it all depends on price. I’m won’t pay stupid money for a gpu as a matter of principle and may well end up getting a ps5 when the price drops next year maybe.

Tbf the One X seriously showed what consoles could do when a company put a bit more effort into how it was actually playing games.
That machine is a serious beast that simply cant be dismissed, the price to performance ratio is off the charts.

This is not a benefit of consoles as you can also do this on PC (but have the added benefit of being able to play on MKB if that suits the game better).

Pretty sure people are using keyboard and mouse on current consoles.

To actually play games or just to control the UI?
