With the second screen/smartglass type integration can the next gen consoles steal some of the PCs ground in the RTS genre?

As an example could they do a total war game?

You could select your units quickly just by tapping on the tile on your second screen. You could give unit commands with your touch screen. Make a unit wheel formation or even change formation with finger movements.

Ok you could probably never compete with a keyboard and mouse player in the same sense as the FPS genre but just look at how consoles dominate that genre these days.

Well, since no decent RTS games exist on Android/iOS tablets yet I don't hold much hope :(

It's a massively untapped genre on touch screen devices and as it by far my favourite genre I personally think it's a crying shame!

Looking forward to seeing something like Smartglass work effectively on the next gen consoles. The ability to have maps/comms/storyline/unit stats/friends & chat etc stuff coming up on a second screen could be absolutely stunning and surprisingly not discussed often.

Lot of potential for some darn clever stuff really adding to console gaming.

RTS's are weird, as they are no single version of them...

You got games like Q+C,dawn of war and the likes where you build buildings, then units...

then you got your HHOMM and such...

I do like RTS and I'm sure they will breakthrough especially ones such as HHOMM.

But as I said RTS is pretty difficult to define, as there are loads...kinda like metal and all the sub genres lol.

Saw a debate about second screen gaming, and in general most people have a second screen like a tablet or phone so that they can do something else on it and not for gaming.

Should have happened already on Wii U. Pikmin is on the way for it. Works very well with Wii Remote and Gamepad I find.

I never understood why Xbox didn't use the chat pad for hotkeys in RTS games. I loved Halo wars on the 360 (and I hate halo) and chat pad hot keys could have made the game so much more user friendly and sold some chat pads!

Are their any RTS games for the xbox one?

I've only ever seen a few attempts at RTS games on consoles and all of them have been very poor. Red Alert 3 was decent but that's only because I played through it with my wife in co-op mode - so clouded judgement there from me.

Been a year since the thread started but no real progression to getting a decent RTS on console.

For me, Diablo 3 has shown that with careful attention you can create what I usually deem as 'PC only' games for a console and integrate the controls effectively.

For many years, I almost only played top down ARPGs on PC but since playing D3 on PS4 I preferred it a lot.
Not sure RTS can get there but I'm open to any attempts at doing so as it's a great genre and I'd be chuffed to have a selection of good games to play on the sofa.

There's a few for the playstation from Westwood and bullfrog, I have them along with the mouse but not played them yet.

I beg to differ, Z Steal Soldiers on Tegra devices is amazing! Controls are mapped perfectly on my Nvidia Shield, showing how it could be easily adapted for console release - I know it'd be a day one purchase for me if it was available on PS4.

And that was out on the 25th August 2013 was it? :p

The Wii U Pad is perfect for RTS. It's a shame that no one has bothered with it.

You can make some use out of the PS4 touch pad, don't know if its proportional to the screen. But it must have some use of that nature.

I remember in the Angry Joe review of Rome 2 TW on youtube he said that the streamlining of the interface could be a prelude to a console release. Could be epic, I think it is inevitable that the series will make it across.
