Hi,

I want to console into a Cisco from a laptop that is running Vista and only has USB ports, I guess the first thing I'm going to need is a USB to serial adapter!

I'm sure some of you guys have done this 100's of time so I thought I'd pick your brains.

Yeah, USB to serial convertor, loads out there, quality varies. Not many laptops come with serial built in these days, which is pain to be honest, I've just taped by convertor and cisco lead together so I've essentially got a USB to cisco cable...

We've had better success at work with a Belkin USB<>Serial widget. Siemens PBXs are quite fussy. Best value laptops that still have proper serial ports are the Tosh Tecra M9L/M9 or Dell Lattitude - both around £500/£600+VAT.

My work Dell (Latitude D420) doesn't have serial. The most useful thing for me is one that doesn't need drivers but if you'll just use it with one machine that isn't so important.
