Console vs PC

Hence I said "type of games you are into"

as for seating position...how is that relevant?

You can plug a X-box 360 into a PC monitor as easy as you can plug a PC into a TV.

Sure you can, but you probably won't enjoyed getting mauled if you're into on-line FPS, for example and you probably won't like using a mouse on your couch. Expand that to type of game and whether you play multi-player if you feel the need to be explicit.

Now if you feel like being *****, type of game has nothing to do with playing at high settings except for a couple of idiots who class "zOMG high graphics" as a game type.

I'm not so sure these new consoles are going to be the leap people are expecting.

currently pc graphics are being held back by consoles and no one can dispute this so we should also expect pc graphics to rapidly increase for a short time

Just look at some of the newer pc focused titles that are coming out like pcars where you can zoom right up and stick the camera millimetres from the car and all the detail is still their because of the ridiculous polygon count the cars have

The GPUs in Xboxes and Playstations are made by ATi and Nvidia respectively, the same guys who make the GPUs for PCs.

What usually happens is both companies strike a deal (or rather they get paid a lot of money) with Sony/Microsoft that the GPUs they make for their new consoles are the most advanced and powerful they can muster and that they can't release PC equivalents (or rather more powerful PC cards) for a certain amount of time.

So I would expect the next gen consoles to have the most powerful GPUs those guys can produce for at least a few months anyway.

i can see the PS4 and new Xbox having a lifecycle of 8-10 years really. The only reason anyone would want/need something more powerful (if they spec them right) is for 4k which is still a long way off mainstream. 1080p will be the most common resolution for TV screens for the next decade IMO. No point in most 'normal' TV watchers having anything higher. The new consoles had better be able to do this natively.

Even if that were possible they wouldn't do it as a few years down the line they want to sell you them again.

Can you imagine a PC from 2002 playing today's games? :p

If gamers were car enthusiasts...

PC would be someone who loves to drive but also likes to strip it down and fiddle with it.

Console. They just want the best car and drive the bloody thing.

Probably the best analogy I can make. It others words a bit more of a thinking gamer.

I am all for Keyboard/Mouse on FPS, speaking from someone who was in a clan, co-own a server that ran the No.1 ranked for MOH/COD in the world back in 2002-2004.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt and frag kill to prove it :p

The point of the 7 years is that you can use the same console you bought back in launch day to play games 7 years on as you did in day one. I don't think any PC will that was considered even "cutting edge" back in 2005 can run a game that comes out this week in any reasonable setting.

I have an 8800GT here that I'm half tempted to test out on some new games just to see what the performance is like, it came out in 2007 but the performance should be similar to a 'cutting edge' set up from late 2005.

Might actually get some answers to this :p

I have a ATI X800XT 256MB AGP, cost me £300 in 2005.

Think it would still run games? lol

I know the current answer. But I have been thinking of selling my consoles recently to buy a GPU for my pc.

With news of sony's 'future of playstation' press conference, I decided to wait to see what happens.

My question is, could a PS4 be any better than the PCs I see around on the net?

Maria Carey > Beyonce

Well that was silly :p

The x1800xt came out the same time as the 360, would be a far better card to use as a comparison. Similar with the 7800GTX, 2 of which in SLi would be a cutting edge PC in 2005 and offer similar performance to a single 8800gt.

Just checked and I've had my PC for 4 years and 6 months! Plays Skyrim at 50fps with loads of texture mods added, although it could do with 2gb vram to add the super high res packs.

I'd imagine you could get at least 6 years out of a PC if you dont mind lowering the settings mlater on.

It depends what you consider reasonable to be honest. I have a 7 series card with it and can still run cod and first played with my 9800pro. You generally need to play in a lower directx /shader mode and the games run fine.

Of course you'll be at a disadvantage to all the kids running around 250fps but if you're comparing it purely from a console basis, consoles generally look crap and run slow where my eyes are concerned and I could do the same with a PC.

Anyway my point is you don't need to run the upgrade treadmill. You might catch the bug when you realise how nice things can look, but it's not a requirement to be a PC gamer. Only "enthusiasts" generally treat their PCs like that.

For the record though, I played crysis and metro on an 8800 (a 2006 card) that won me an iLan and a EuroCup, but I'm not cool enough to have a rank1 server. :p

what BS

they have always been stripped down versions of whatever was currently the pc generation at the time and not always the top model either.

they have heat and power restrictions with consoles.

go look at the xbox gpu and what chip it was based off the xenos has almost half the transistors that an x1900 had

Right now I have a i7/680GTX/32G Ram at my finger tips with a 2550x1440 monitor.

It has not seen a single game :p

for whatever reason i prefer much action type games for a console but strategy games strictly for pc. not that i think there are many strategy games on the consoles in the first place?
