Consoles dying.

I'm just curious about this. Some people have multiple consoles dying on them while others don't experience any problems, ever.

I have had a Sega Megadrive, PS1, 3 PS2's and two Xbox 360's (swapped for other reasons) and a PS3 and I generally treat my consoles like crap. They are on for days on pause and are not really placed in a good spot when it comes to ventilation and are usually covered in dust. But I have never had one die on me.

So what I'm wondering is:
Have you had a console(s) YLOD/RROD, and if so then how do you treat them and where are they stored?

:)
My 360 RROD'd twice, once in a poor place and once not in a poor place and other than the positioning they are treat just fine. Bought a new 360 and it's had no problems at all and I play quite a bit.

Only console that has ever broke on me (as the old 360 was prepared so I don't count it as broke until it breaks again and is out of warranty as then it's still being repaired for free) was my old PS1 since it got chipped so I don't blame Sony and my original Xbox which was bought on launch and broke a month before the 360 came out so did it's rounds at least.

Mastersystem- worked fine until I sold it.

Megadrive- worked for years until it was stolen.

Game boy- Worked fine for years despite being dropped about a billion times.

Game Gear - worked fine until I sold it.

Playstation 1. Two of these died on me. Well known issues involving plastic parts in the laser mechanism wearing out. Will happen to every playstation one if it gets enough use.

Dreamcast. A known problem regarding a capacitor near the controller ports, caused by me using an unofficial dodgy controller. I fixed the issue and it still works fine now.

N64. No probs other than worn out joypads.

Playstation 2. One died on me, again... known issues with plastic parts wearing out if you use it enough. Replaced with one of the slimline ones which still works perfectly.

Conclusion? Sony consoles are badly made.

My launchday 360 is still downstairs, it has RROD'd twice on me in 2008, which caused me to rip the thing up (pita to take apart!) and refit the X-Clamp myself. Since then it's been perfectly fine downstairs.

Upstairs in my room I have a Jasper 360 that has been fine since mid 2009 iirc. I only use it for older games though...not bought a title for it since AC2:Brotherhood.

One 360 but that was due to the stupid NXE update which bricked my firmware. Rang microsoft and they said the error was on their part, sent me a brand new 360 3 days later :)

I've pretty much had all the consoles & handhelds since day one, skipping a few of the crappy ones such as a CD32, 3D0, Nokia Gage, that kinda thing.

The only ones I've ever had fail is the original 360. Maybe I may have had a laser go on a an old PS1, can't remember if it was on mine or someone else's that I was handling, since people use to bring them to me to chip.

Anyway, I should note, that I always look after my things. Perhaps even to an OCD level.

So if anyone was to ever ask me, i'd say the 360 has only really been an unreliable piece of hardware, everything else has been solid.

Just had my 360 elite RROD yesterday. I read that the warranty for RROD was extended to 3 years but on xbox.com it says my warranty ran out november 2010. Deliberating giving the towel trick a shot as I don't really have much to loose seeing as I need to pay for a repair either way.
