Constant HDD noise and activity

Laptop froze up and crashed watching Youtube videos last night. After waiting a while I regained sluggish control but now in Windows 7 the HDD light is always on and the HDD itself is making a lot of noise the entire time.

I mention this only occurs in Windows 7 though, because my laptop has a quick launch option (Asus Express Gate) which gives me access to basic applications (I'm using it now). In this 'splashtop' environment I have zero hard-drive problems, no noise etc.

That's why I'm hoping it's just something in Windows being gay... I already tried a system restore back 24hrs but to no avail.

In Windows, performance is noticeably sluggish, HDD makes lots of noise, and the light is always on.

Ideas?
 
sounds like its on the way out can u not download hirens boot cd and run a hdd diagnostic?

or download the manufacturers hdd test via there website and confirm the fault...

id backup right away just in case
 
Thanks, did some extra digging around with some extra tools. Found processes like 'TrustedInstaller.exe' (Windows Update?) hogging the system along with Search Indexing or something. HDD goes whisper quiet after killing them.
