Hi,

I have a Synology DS212J NAS and the hard drive inside it seems to be spinning constantly, and I'm not copying anything to / streaming anything from the NAS

It has been working fine for around a year now and this has just randomly happened today, normally it would go into deep sleep mode when not in use but it isn't doing this today

My brother mentioned it to me earlier today (but I was copying something to it at the time) but it has definitely been doing this for at least two hours now, I have tried restarting it too

The drive is a Western Digital Green drive, 2TB

Is this a common problem of a HDD? I have left it for 2 hours and it is still happening so I will turn the NAS off for now as I don't want to ruin the HDD

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance :)

Virus scan? Brownout caused the power supply to it to get a bit flaky so it's rescanning the disks? Photo thumbnail caching?
And the HDD is laughing at you thinking 2 extra hours use is going to hurt it... ;)

Thanks I will try a virus scan

I'll turn it back on, like you say it is most likely doing something important in the background... I'll leave it on and see what happens

Not sure what it was doing but I powered it up this morning, checked it at around 5pm and it was in deep sleep mode so is functioning like normal

Thanks all :)

I meant the ds212J was doing it's own internal virus scan :p But I think I've read it shouldn't do this and only does 'incremental' scans of files.

But I've had mine give the 'not shutdown properly - rescanning error' when it's just been a surge in the supply, enough to knock it out of whack sorta thing.
