If he was able to use his euro+gbp currency interchangeably then they are worth the same - it doesnt matter what the official exchange rate is

I'm sure many companies and bars would have been happy to take £ as like for like with euros. I'm sure they still would be. Unlucky for the suckers actually handing over the £ and paying a 10-20% premium though.
