I thought if you purchased something online (eg: an electronic device) you generally had a period within which you could return it if you were not happy with it.

From reading a few companies return's policies, they don't seem to behave this way, instead suggesting they will only allow an item to be returned if it is faulty or has NOT been opened. This is even the case with some of the biggest online retailers.

Anyone shed any light on this?

You are allowed 7 working days in which to send an item back, it is possible to open some items as you are granted viewing of it as you would in a high street shop
obviously some items cannot be or should'nt be opened

In the case of an electronic item, you would be permitted to plug it in and try it?

If you are still within 7 working days (take BH into account) the I would you suggest sending it back under DSR. If the company start getting prickly about it contact you credit card company and contest it. CC companies get very hacked off with DSR complaints and tend (given the evidence I have seen) to support the customer.
