First up, this isn't a medical thread so relax.

I have been trying various types of lenses for about a year now. I am on the verge of just giving up. No matter what I try I always end up with eyes looking like some creature from another world. No really they are just always so bloodshot and looks like I have been having too many emotional moments.

Opticians always say there is a little dryness but nothing else to worry about. I don't know if it is the materials or what but it is well annoying.

So the question is how long did it take you to get on to wearing lenses and was there any problems at the start? How long did it take for problems to disappear? Any problems with the specsavers solution?

I started on daily disposables but switched to extended wear a few years back, basically you leave them in all month. I haven't worn glasses for years and change every monthish, sometimes a few weeks over, no big deal. Haven't looked back since, super cheap and not like having to wear contacts at all.

Never had any problems with my Specsavers lenses or solution, though tbh I used so little of the solution that I'm not exactly an ideal candidate to ask. Of the 3 bottles they used to send me every 3months I might use half of one in all that time.

Have you tried different branded lenses? so you have anything that makes selection of lenses more difficult? EG. an odd shape or size lens or prescription. I for example can only get one brand of daily disposable lenses because my eyes are flatter than normal apparently.

I really never had anything to worry about though, but I never wore my lenses unless I was going to school/college/out. As soon as I came in it was glasses time just because I knew it would tire my eyes if I tried to have them in for 16 hours. If you haven't already, try just wearing them for work and taking them out when you get home.

Are you using daily disposables, weekly, monthly or something else?

I've got daily disposables that I wear from time to time and most days when I wear them it's not a problem but every so often I'll manage to put the contacts in and within an hour or so my eyes will seem to reject them and one will fall out (always the left eye for some reason). It's possible that I've got them round the wrong way as they're very flexible but I don't think so. There is a noticeable feeling of having contacts in for me but it shouldn't be uncomfortable.

I have tried about 5 or 6 types of monthly lenses including the ones you can wear all day/night. Also tried a few pairs of daily lenses. Many of them would feel comfortable but they leaving me looking ridiculous!

Was going to get laser but they wouldn't operate as I'm borderline case. +3.5 at the moment but will reach +5.5 before long if I remember right. I don't think there is anything odd about my prescription.

Edit: at the moment I am trying Acuvue Oasys which are 2 weekly lenses. They are very comfy but after 2 hours my eyes are more red than white. Very annoying!

I had problems and so did my wife with the cleaning solutions until we started using easysept. It took me about 3 months of gradual useage to get used to mine. Have no issues now at all.

I'm tempted to try contacts as glasses can be a pain in a motorbike helmet but I have to get over the fear of putting my finger near my eye :(

It's easy unless you have no fine motor skills at all. In which case please get off your bike lol.

People put them in differently but you don't actually need to look at your finger approaching your eye. I look to up and to the left to put them on the eyeball and THEN move my eye round to look at my finger which centres the lens on the eye.

Plenty of people just plonk it right on there though.

Would contacts not be worse when on a bike? I was karting a few weeks back and I left a little gap at the bottom of my visor. There seemed to be a current of air almost forcing the lenses out!

Dannyjo - that's interesting. I was wondering if the solution that the lenses bathe in could be a problem. I have only tried the two types that Specsavers provide. Is there something different about easysept and was it specifically recommended?

Also, your a pilot aren't you? Does the aircon in the cabin not drive you crazy with lenses in? Ignore if wrong person!

I mountain bike, go cart, anything with contacts. The only time they might come loose is when you rub your eyes hard.

I tried sleeping with lenses in a few times and it is horrible when waking up. Normally one was still in my eye and the other had fallen out and dried up. Eyes hurt like crazy too.

I got this quite bad as well but since I started wearing the Trueye ones it definitely has helped a lot, I remember in the evenings would sometimes be like peeling them off my eyes whereas these stay soft and moist. I have slight astigmatism in one of my eyes and Trueye don't offer one for that yet but just use the normal ones as they are so much more comfortable.

As my eyes are quite dry the monthly ones just didn't work for me as a lot of residue kept building up on them

It took a while for my eyes to acclimatise to having contacts in. The bloodshot-ness went away after that, however it comes back every now and then if I wear them for over 12 hours or sometimes at random.

(monthly daytime wear)

Never sleep in them unless they are ones for sleeping in. The lens dries out and shrinks while also doing its best to stick to your eye.

Nah mate I finished school I'm an engineer not a pilot ;)

If your eyes are still red after a few weeks I would definately see about changing solution. One of the early ones we used gave my wife hell.

People react differently to them, I cannot drive with mine in unless the air is coming out the window vents or floor vents. If I use the forward vents my eyes dry out very quickly. They dry then feel like they are lifting.

I can understand the karting thing, the air would dry my eyes fast. I would have to wear glasses or keep the lid shut. Villeneuve used to keep his shut for that very reason :D

Ah sorry wrong person then! Yes that sounds very similar to me. I have all the vents on the car closed or pointed away from me.

I guess if the lenses hold some solution and it is released into your eye then it could cause issues. I see the easysept has to be used for at least 6 hours before wear. It could be dodgy if you forgot to leave them so long and then you would get crazy burns!
