So i contacted my ISP as we need faster speeds here, my step uses it to upload all his work information when he gets home, and he receives his next days work over night

my mum uses it occasionally (quick books , emails etc)

Both use it to watch amazon prime / netflix etc now and again, and they download old programs they've missed on occasion too

I use it for gaming, watching videos etc (so hefty downloads sometimes like Forza Horizon 4 ultimate + updates, steam games etc etc

I've been told we will not go Fiber (my step dad is very anti about his downtime because of his work and we've had lots of holes drilled before for telephone and broadband wires on more than 2 occasions)

So anyway, we are fairly close to the exchange here, i always thought we where on an 8Mb line, i download upto 10Mb/s

contacted my ISP about getting a faster speed on the same line, as there email reply is as follows (i don't understand there email and im hoping somebody can shed some light on this please)

The FTTC ranges available to your line would be as follows;

FTTC Range A (Clean)
78 - 78 (Mbps Down)
20 - 20 (Mbps Up)

FTTC Range B (Impacted)
78 - 65 (Mbps Down)
20 - 18 (Mbps Up)

Ranges A and B; the term Clean relates to a line which is free from any wiring issues (e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions, and the term Impacted relates to a line which may have wiring issues (e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions.

Thank you for choosing FireFly

and there 2nd email :

Hi,

on follow up to the previous email, you are not on an 8Mb service as you are currently connected at approx 12Mbps, the maximum your line can take on ADSL.

If you require more speed then FTTC is the only option.

No extra holes are required as the service is delivered through the existing telephone line, all work is done outwith the premises.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Thank you for choosing FireFly

What's the question? Their e-mail gave you the answer about the speed. You're on the fastest you can get with ADSL. If you want more speed then FTTC is the only way, and is usually a very trouble-free upgrade.

Fttc should be as simple as supplier sending out a new router, and giving you a switchover date.

At some point in that date your existing connection will cease, and the new fibre one goes live - just a case of swapping the router over

FTTC means fibre to your closest cabinet and then normal existing copper to your house.
FTTP means fibre directly to your premises (house) which is faster, needs installing and costs more.

i get it now, thanks for that explanation :)

so FTTP is Fiber Broadband what we all here about ?

Most people at home get FTTC through their existing copper phone lines. The difference to broadband for FTTC is the link from the exchange to your nearest BT cabinet is fibre and then copper to your house, with broadband it is copper all the way to the exchange. Fibre is faster with a longer range than copper. FTTP means fibre from the exchange into your house.

When most people say fibre they think there's only one fibre product and that's what they're getting.
They almost always end up getting FTTC.
Not a lot of places have FTTP. I've got it here but they don't like offering it because it's not as profitable as FTTC.
If the cabinet is close to you, chances are you won't notice the latency difference between FTTP and FTTC anyway.

It should be noted that:
Telephone Line Rental : 14.99
100GB FTTC Rental : 24.99* or Unlimited FTTC Rental : 29.99
Activation : 40.00

Isn't a particularly good deal. Just about every ISP will discount activation from the standard Openreach charge of £50, many making it completely free and then paying £44.98 per month for an unlimited service isn't very good either. As an example Sky currently do Fibre Max for £27pm including free activation and Line Rental. A Calls package is £4 (E&W calls) or £8 (Anytime UK) It should also be noted that they're quoting you for the maximum service, the 80/20 profile. They may also do 55/10 or 40/10 as well if outright speed isn't necessary and this will likely be cheaper.
