I know this should probably be the "Mobile Phones" section, but i need advice quickly and GD seems to get the most views!

Anyway, my dad and brother are going to Las Vegas tomorrow as my brother is getting married. I have given my dad my Nokia 6120 Classic, which will work on the networks in the US, mainly AT&T. I was just wondering, I am currently on 3 (Three) here in the UK and the 6120c is locked to 3, will the phone automatically connect to AT&T over there? Or does he need to buy a new sim card for it?

Also, since i gave him my phone, i took his in exchange since i dont really use my mobile that often, but his is quite a old Nokia 2630 on Orange. Will i be able to send him texts and receive texts from him even though the 2630 isn't compatible with US networks?

Its really just as a back-up texting, he will be getting a phone card over there and calling a certain each day, but the texting is just incase of any issues and to keep in touch with my brother over there for meeting up etc.

Sorry that this is probably not the best place for this thread, but i just need a fast answer!

Cheers guys

Whether the 6120c will connect to the US network will depend on whether the UK SIM in the phone has international roaming enabled on the account (and phone compatibility with the available US networks)

If you are in the UK the 2630 is fine as you are connecting to the UK mobile networks to send/receive the text not US ones. The SMS message should be routed through from the US network to the UK one.

You'll be able to text each other no problem.

Bit of a pain getting a PAYG SIM over there though, not as easy/cheap as here !

Looking on the 3 website it has charges for payg international roaming in the US, so I'm guessing the 3 sim should work.

Do you think he should need to buy an AT&T sim card? Will the 3 one not automatically connect?

If you have roaming the 3 should be OK, but can get expensive.

Vodafone charged me £1 a minute to receive calls

AT&T now want $20 for a PAYG SIM, but it costs $100 to activate.

You should be able to get a T Mobile PAYG SIM for around $50 activated but without any credit.

When you text from UK no need for +44 but from the sates you'll need to use +44 and drop the 0

right cheers bud. I'll change the numbers that he'll be texting now in the contacts. He ain't too good with more complex phones :p

One last thing. Checked the network settings on the 6120c and it's set to "dual mode" with the option of utms or something. Do I need to change anything or is it all set?
