i know what contrast ratio is in theory, but right now my monitor has 3000:1 and im looking to buy the 24 inch OCUK which has 1000:1

the question is how much diff will this make for me? will the black bars on the top (when watching a movie) be brighter? etc... also what would 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio be like (samsung OLED), the total black colour is totally turned off? with no backlight

cheers.

1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, let's assume a white level of 500 cd/m2 would give you a black level of 0.0005 cd/m2. Compare with say 0.07 cd/m2 from a quality CRT, that's 140 times darker (from the OLED). I think in a pitch dark room your eyes would have serious difficulty seeing that as different from the black around you.

Of course that's assuming the 1,000,000:1 figure is accurate, which it may not be.

3,000:1 versus 1,000:1, yep the first one is dynamic, the second one static. You should get a better black depth with a 3000:1 dynamic contrast screen, as the backlight is dimmed, but only in dark scenes and it can cause nasty artifacts.
