Controllers for console emulation

I'm in the process of building an all-encompassing server, in which one of it's functions will be as a console emulator.

My main sticking point is the controllers. I'm probably going to use the XBox 360 controller as I prefer it to pretty much everything else and already have a wireless one.

My issue would be, since I'm looking at getting 3 more controllers; would i be better off getting 3 wireless ones with battery packs and a receiver or 4 wired controllers?

I accept this plan may change if steam launch a controller at a good price point!

I'd get at least one with a decent d-pad. Most old games don't use analogue and the 360 pad has perhaps the worst d-pad in the history of d-pads!

It's mostly going to be used for N64, at least 90% of the time I'd reckon!

I think then the analogue will be used as I'm fairly certain it should be mapped across in Project64 etc.

You can get a USB N64 controller off a popular auction site for around £10

Got one a few weeks ago and have been using and works just like the old ones.

With "no emulation talk" rule is this type of thread allowed? I'd probably remove it just incase, OP.

Good man. N64 is as good as it gets :) Oddly tho - the games haven't aged well visually. They still play great. The 2D SNES stuff still looks excellent.

I went that route too. The N64 sticks were actually digital - most games are ok with a current analogue stick, but some feel very weird. Golden Eye just doesn't work!

You can also get USB interfaces from ebay that will connect most of the original controllers to a PC. I have one that I can plug the old PS1 controllers into. My mate has one for SNES controllers.

Think that only apply's to naming an linking emulators an rom's, the op is asking for some thing that's not piracy or theft.

I may be wrong thou.

Well it's stil here...

I've been doing some digging and it seems that although the 360 controller is my favourite ergonomically, it isn't the best in terms of the D-Pad.

Currently considering PS3 controllers! But I'm interested in which direction Steam take so will probably end up waiting a while to see what kind of price point they hit.

Nah, I'd leave it up. He's not asking about emulators or roms for them. All he's asking about is advice for Controllers.

So yeah leave forum policing to the mods. ;)

I'm hardly "policing" the forums, just trying to advise to prevent him being banned.

Dreamcast controller was fairly awesome... I was a fan of the N64 controller too, but would rather have a modern controller in case I wanted to use it for other things.

Could always wait until ps4 and xbox one, I guess they'll release the new versions of the controls for pc quite quickly and may be even better for you.

I really like the 360 control though.
