makemkv will make a 1:1 backup with no loss of quality.

The output file will be an .mkv.

If you google the registration key the programme is still in Beta so unlock the full programme.

Simply rename the .vob to .mpg (assuming it is not encrypted)
It will play fine

Depends on the player. A VOB is not the same as an MPEG2 file though it contains imbedded mpeg2 data.

There are programs that will extract the data from it, AVIdemux probably (if you can stop it from crashing)
