Convert DVD's to DIVX

I have hundreds of kids dvd's that I want to convert into something like Divx, so I can store them on a hard drive to play from my Pc and save having discs all over the place, and stop them getting damaged. Does anyone know any good free/cheap software to do this.

I remember ripping a lot of my DVDs to Divx years ago when I was on an athlon 1.3Ghz T-bird. I'd have to leave the PC on all night, 5-6 hrs it would take. Wonder how long it takes these days though, an hour?

But you should pay attention to that handbrake doesn't handle DTS audio tracks or single VOB files. If you have a DVD-ROM with random video files saved on it (AVI, MPG, WMV, MOV, etc), Handbrake won't be able to convert these files. Maybe you need some other tools like iFunia DVD ripper Pro as a complement~

Cheers for all the advice I tried a trial version of a program called Magic DVD Ripper. It converts a dvd straight to Avi. It takes a while but it's really simple to use and the results are quite good...
I don't think I will be doing all my dvd's as it would take years but the kids ones are what i'm ploughing through now.
