Well, firstly i tried to burn a dvd from a .avi file using nero. But there was a massive lag in audio about 5 minutes into the dvd that just gets worse and worse.
Next i tried to follow the instructions on this site:
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/article_avi2dvd_tmpgenc_page1.html

But still, massive latency, even worse now, in fact. about 1000x worse.

So, here i am, begging the help of fellow OcUKers.. What do i use and how do i use it? :(

Ben.

I've found that if the audio is encoded with vbr, then you need to extract it to a wav and re-mux it as cbr. This normally corrects the two going out of sync.

I use Graphedit and this guide to extract and re-mux the files, but there are easier ways :) e.g. VirtualDub

Once you have re-mux'd them, you should be able to convert/burn them with Nero

but i'm sure someone else will come along and tell you a much easier way to do it

Righto.. I tried to extract the audio with virtualdub and convert it to cbr, then re-mux, but i think i went wrong somewhere because i changed a few of the video options as per the link in my OP. Maybe i shouldnt have mhh. But yah, at the moment im trying this:
Converted avi to dvd in windvd, then wnt into nero make new dvd bit and then it asked me if i wanted to convert it all to ntfc (i think?, as aposed to PAL) and i declined. Then it srated to 'transcode steams', though why i dont know?, it was already converted to dvd format? in win dvd.. Anyway i'm gonna waste another disk burning that, then if it fails (im sceptical) time to learn how to extract audio etc :(.

I use nero vision 4, that's part of the nero 7 suit. Easy wizard interface with about 5 steps, very simple to use.

Have you watched the Avi, to see if it is in sync prior to encoding?
Even WinAvi will fail to encode in sync if, the Avi is poor to start with. Download the trial version of WinAvi and see if your video encodes ok. There will be a watermark but at least you will know if it works for you.

If that fails, post back and I will explain to you how to extract the audio using Vdub. ;)

Ati AvivoXcode

800Mb to DVD in 17mins

It may only work with X1800XT hardware but i think it works on any card at the moment with a registry hack
