Converting my iPhone into a Satnav?

It's on a cradle mounted on the windscreen. If you can get it to do a trip from one end of London through the City to the other end without it getting lost, telling you to go down one way roads, putting you on a totally random road or plain not tracking you then you must be doing well. Seriously, i have never in 12 months had it complete a journey correctly. Whereas i drove 1000 miles around Germany and Austria last year using a 1st gen Tom Tom with Europe maps and it was flawless. Got me from Munich to a tiny Austrian hamlet with no errors at all. That was a 400km journey on its own..

As someone else said, if you use satnav all the time get a dedicated unit, if you use it infrequently try CoPilot. Might work for you i guess.
I must say that I don't agree with this. I have had Co-Pilot installed on my 3GS or the last year, and it works a treat. i have never had any major problems with it and will always get me to the correct location. I don't use it with bluetooth GSM so I can't comment on that.

I think fo rthe money that Co-Piloy costs it is well worth the money.

The only problem I have with this is in my wifes car when I have the phone in landscape mode it just does not get a GPS signal. Change it portrait and it works fine. This is more of a GPS signal problem with the phone rather than Co-Pilot though.

I thouroughly recommend Co-Pilot.

Tom Tom on my iphone loses signal frequently, including on the motorway. It also freaks out often, thinking that I'm on a parallel road/field. It annoys me hugely and cannot be relied upon, used it to get back from gatwick after a long flight recently and it managed to lose signal for some considerable time whilst driving near the airport and on the m23.

you can buy a TomTom or get one for free IF your iPhone is jailbreaked. Really good I use it on a regular basis, has all the features and perks a normal satnav system would have, highly detailed and easy to follow. And whats more, you can get any or specific maps just like you would with actual packages; Europe (all or west/east), Asia, Americas etc.

Does it rely on an internet connection? My jailbroken iPhone (1st generation) has a sim card from an earlier contract and internet isn't part of the contract (I use wifi access for browsing on it).

Nope no internet or 3G required, runs straight off GPS, however this is the iPhone 4. Your iPhone 1st Gen may not support GPS... find out if it does, if it doesn't then you may have to invest in a GPS adapter/receiver (still beats costs through other means though)

I use Co-pilot on my 3gs and tomtom mount and it works perfectly, it has been as good as a dedicated tomtom unit i used for 100k+ worth of driving, i certainly would not consider buying another satnav as the iphone does it as well as a dedicated unit.

I will have to try all the free options first and see what works the best for me. :D

Thank you all for the recommendations.

I used navfree in an emergancy this weekend after the tom tom decided to do its freezing trip while I was half was across the country not knowing where I was, it did a great job of getting me where i was going, and im tempted t loose the tomtom completely.

You should have got an Android phone instead ;)

I am thinking about getting an android phone soon. What is the preferred uk/international satnav solution on this platform? (Excluding the google maps inbuilt system which i understand requires a live data connection which is not acceptable).
