Does anyone know how I could convert my TF2 demos (.dem I think) to something I could use with media players? I tried zamzar converter site but they don't support .dem files.

Any ideas? Preferably something that free ;)

.dem files just store information for the game to recreate the scene it recorded. It's not an actual video file. eg when you run the demo, TF2 will just render the scene exactly as it happened when you recorded it.

To get it as a movie you'll need to use another program to record the game whilst the demo is running. Xfire can now record ingame, as can Fraps. Both can do this for free, although Fraps will have a watermark on the video and will be restricted to 30 seconds per clip unless you buy the full version.

And they're MUCH bigger than the .dem files.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if it's possible to fast-forward .dem files? You know where you have a 40-minute demo but you don't want to watch the first 20 minutes.

Shift + F2 does bring up the demo player

You can speed up the rate of play which the demo plays at from 0% - 600% so thats kinda like a fast forward.

If you want to go forward in large chunks, you can just type in the tick number to go to and it will load up to that point. If youve gone past the point you want, you can type in a lower tick number but the demo will have to reload.

Each demo that you run is like running a mini local server which loads the demo details. Some weird things can happen when you fast forward to the end of a large demo etc, sometimes the sound is out of synch for a short while etc but on the whole it works fine.

Fraps is the best program for recording ingame videos. The full version can be obtained quite easily for free.

You will also need some video editing software. the Raw Fraps video files are HUGE! (talking 600megs for 10 seconds huge!)

yep, best software I can think of for this is Sony Vegas. There are other alternatives though if you don't like it.

The .dem files will give you much better quality than fraps can ever give you as you are not rendering it in real time and you are dumping a raw avi which is full quality which you can then transcode to any format you wish. All Source games feature the demo recording so it's silly to use anything else.

This was a video I recorded using a .dem file: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w4urPeEJkI
