i have been using convert X to dvd for many years

the thing is, even when set on "time critical" conversion, it only uses 20% of the CPU and none of the GPU so i feel im waiting much longer than i need to be

is there something that can make use of the i7 2600, the z68 quicksync?

im hoping for an alternative that can make proper use of the computer so im not waiting as long :)

have you set convertX to use all cores? It only take my quad Athlon 20min to convert a 4gb blue ray rip to dvd!

ok then, ive just done a test conversion with 8 cores selected, it has gotten better, but still not what i want really

The conversion is happening at 5.5x the real fps, but only using 27% of the CPU and most of that is one core

if only there was a program that could max it out, i'd be getting 20x approx :D

What type of video are you encoding? MKV's take a lot longer than say AVI due to how they are made and require more time. Also in your screen shot I see you are only doing a single pass, I would advise to change that to two pass since it will produce better results.

What is your CPU running at? My i7 930 (1366) runs at 4GHz and I covert a 2 hour AVI movie in about 10 minutes give or take a bit.

Also what version of ConvertXtoDVD are you using? If you are not using the latest version then update it and try again and see if there is a difference.

You might have joy with one of the following:

DVD Flick

Avi2Dvd

Free Video Converter

they were avi files

we watch the dvd's on an sdtv, i have tried both before and you couldnt tell the difference so i stick to 1 pass for speed :)

i7 2600 is running at stock (non-k version)

using the latest :)

thanks :)

Are the AVI files using the XviD/DivX codec if not then what are they using? I just tried a AVI I have here and here is the speed;

Quite a strange puzzle we have here it would seem.

Strange combination there, what is the file extension of the files you are converting? Are they MP4? If so then that could possibly explain the slow speed, try to find a file which is a AVI and uses XviD or DivX and convert that and you should see the speed difference if you do then I think we could assume it is just the file type which is slowing things down.

As stoner said above, if it is an MP4 it will convert slower, don't ask me why I've no idea. But I converted a few files the other day one an MP4 and one an AVI. The MP4 took noticeably longer to convert, not sure on the difference in time though.

Used to use WinAVI many moons ago, was a handy tool, moved over to convertX for ease of use and updates. If its xvid encoded video in an .avi container you should be getting allot higher than the 133fps encode speed in your screen, especially with a 2600K. For example I hit between 600-900fps depending on the video file, animated files for the most part will encode quicker. I would even hit ~130fps on my old Q9300 at 2.5ghz...so somethings a miss.

Just a thought, but does convertX use its own decoders? as if so this might be your problem, try installing ffdshow and ac3filter if you haven't already.

I use ConvertX2DVD and I love it.

I Open up 4 of them, and convert 4 files to 4 DVDs at the same time.

I force each one to one core mind you, but still, they barely take much more than about 20 minutes to do all 4
