Convince me to get a PS3

Why does every pro PS3 for 2008 argument start with the premise the 360 will have a massive drop in the quality and quantity of it's titles?

If anything the PS3 will only raise it's game up to 360 standard in 2008 and this will be a great thing; but it's a mighty leap of fanboy faith to think it'll leave it standing.

I know what you mean, but your saying it wrong.

The reason Heavely Sword feels more fluid and like your part of a film is because much like God of War the combat is extremely forgiving. You can literally button mash your way through provided you get the stances right.

DMC and expecially Ninja Gaiden are more unforgiving I still found DMC 1 pretty easy but Ninja Gaiden forces you to learn the combat, learn the movesm and ultimately employ them throughout your time playing the game progressively demanding more and more from the player, hence it feels more like a game.

I still peg Heavenly Sword a 6-7 though, AI is zonal relying on trigger points and dreadful, the combat is very contrived and derivative, and ultimately its too short, and playing as kai only served to make me want to kill her, and QTE only worked in Shenmue :D. (BTW BRING ME SHENMUE 3)

I'm a firm believer in "short games are fine as long as its they are brilliant 6 hours" but Heavenly Sword wasn't for me.

Anyway enough debating Heavenly Sword. Drakes looks awful: Go!

ok - but for me Heavenly Sword IS a AAA title for the PS3. Everything about it is next-gen HD luvliness.
I have no idea what you mean when you talk about "contrived and derivative combat" In ninja gaiden sigma you leave an area then come back to it and bam the enemies respawn exactly in the same locations. Combat seemed stilted and not as flowing but yeah HS is more forgiving in that respect but HS is all about you vs ALL where possibly NGS you dont fight that many enemies all at the same time.

DMC you end up backtracking all over the place. So you clear a place out of enemies and they respawn each time you visit that area - i guess it stops the boredom from all the wandering about looking for the next area.

You cant button mash as much as in God of War (and note how heavily respected that game is!).

But like i said if you want tons of enemies on screen and GORGEOUS graphics that are unrivalled in any fighting game this is your game.

And anyway the OP wanted a reason to buy the PS3 - Heavenly Sword is it! Especially if he has a HDTV. if he likes fighting games he wont be dissapointed.

you vs 500 enemies in real time all of them on the screen individually not bad ehh :)

9/10 or even 10/10 tbh.

Agreed!

Heavenly Sword and Ninja Gaiden, in my opinion are both AAA titles. Every PS3 owner should at least rent them both. Though they are both very different games and its not fair to compare them.

i got the 60GBversion the other day and although its primary use will be a BR player / Linux installed media center i will get games on it that i want to play that i cant get on the 360 - but after playing HEavenly Sword for an hour or so the other day (which i think is pretty good) the controller started to hurt my hands, and i thought id much rather be playing my xbox... so i did for 3 hours with no hand pains and a nice controller.

YAY

i agree regarding the ps3 controller :( i prefer the xbox360 one tbh.
(though i prefer the ps3 console over the xbox360)

using the analogue sticks in FPS games is a nightmare really - and i dont recall me being bothered by the xbox360 stick when playing oblivion on it...

Is there any alternative controllers for the ps3 which give better analogue control?

I thought it was just me when it comes to the discomfort of the PS3 controller?
I always put this down to me being a PC only gamer via keyboard & mosue at the time.
For the last year I've mostly gamed via my Xbox 360 and I find the controller fine.
A few months ago a friend of mine bought a PS3 and when I played RFOM, I found the two anologue sticks were too close together and I kept bashing my thumbs together.
Perhaps it's the way I was holding the conroller as I'm not used to Sonys design (I've never owned a previous generation of Playstation).
However, it hasn't put me off the eventual purchase of a PS3.

Its not just you mate who has problems with the PS3 controller, a lot of people do, especially people with big hands.

Personally I love it though.

Alan Wake is the first that comes to mind. But I haven't looked past that as it's my most anticipated game ever. :).
Oh, and Ninja Gaiden 2.

Just wanted to add a little
Fable 2
Halo Wars
Alan Wake
Ninja Gaiden 2
Gears of War 2 (not been announced but I've got a feeling we might see it towards the back end of the year)

All of which are all exclusive. Then we have multi-platform
GTA 4
Devil May Cry 4
Condemned 2
Tom Clancy games (both which have and havent been announced yet)
Last Remnant (Square Enixs' new RPG I'm still skeptical about it though, since I havent really enjoyed a FF game since it went to PS2)

I'm sure there are a lot more to be announced for 2008 and were not even finished with 2007 yet! All the above will help shift a good few consoles even more so for GTA 4 + Gears of War 2 (not been announced) but by the end of 2008 it will have been 2 years since Gears of War was released so its quite possible and they need a big title towards the holiday season IMO, but hey its still 2007 so why even bother yet! :p

MSmalls74 gave the best summed up advice of this thread on the first page. Unbiased and pretty much on the button, All you need to know about both consoles.

Now obviously, the deciding feature is always going to be the games available on the console you want.

So make sure what MSmalls74 said has sunk in first of all, then go off and do some research into games that are coming to both consoles, have a look at gametrailers, And surely enough, You may find you know which console you want.

I personally, want both :p

But am not touching a 360 till its issues are resolved(my friend has just returned his 4th console, and NO, he doesnt mistreat them) . Anyway Id rather own the PS3 with its current catalogue of games.(Which is hardly small anymore) And know the hardware is going to be intact and reliable. And wait for both the 360 to become reliable, and the games to come to the PS3.

Only thing I really actually like about the PS3 pad is the way the triggers 'flip' if that makes sense, but when holding the triggers down normally they are really annoying.

Also if you need convincing to get a PS3 you probably shouldn't get one unless you, yourself feel the need to have one for whatever reason, but you shouldn't need other people to list reasons to get one. :)!

ps3 40gb can be had for £280
Bargain. It's even tempting me ;)

With the 60GB version bundled with 2 games and 2 blu-ray movies from a certain retailer for £349.99, I don't personally see that even @ £280 the 40GB version is a 'bargain'.
Unless of course you have no interest in any of the bundled games or movies.

The way i judge if a games console is any good is its games. At the end of the day its ony as good as its games unless you plan to use the other features.

Right now xbox 360 has miles better games hands down. Halo 3 gears, bioshock pgr etc(depending what you like but most people seem to like these types of games). By this time next year this could all change with the release of mgs4 gt5 killzone2. Some say the 360 still has better games. By next year all the games i have mentioned could have similar games on the other console that are just as good as each other.

Then you have to think about other factors such as price, what you actually get with the system, and what you will actually use it for. The 360 may be cheaper than the ps3 but if you need the wireless bridge then the price creeps closer to the ps3. Even more so with the hd dvd player, costing more than the ps3 with the wireless bridge and the hddvd player.

Another issue you may want to consider is the reliability of each consoles. As you know the 360 has issues with over heating. IMO you shouldnt buy a console with the fear that it might well breakdown. You might be with out it for a few weeks but the times you do have it, you want better games.

IMO id go with the console that has the best games catalouge as neither console has a killer app(im not bothered about bd).

Have you got a 360 op ( couldn't be bothered to read through the thread ), if so grab a ps3, its future looks bright for games and its feature set makes it one of the best bang for buck pieces of kit on the market.

Hello mate.
Are you going to get yourself another PS3?
I've not deleted you from my PSN friends list yet, just in case ;)
