Convince me....

I'm getting a full VR setup next year and I'm so tempted to splash out on a good steering wheel. Assuming it's looked after, how long do they generally last based on obsolescence? If it lasts for 10 years then it seems like a worth while investment. I only ever buy mid-range graphics cards because they only last a few years until it's obsolete so it feels like wasting money but peripherals like a steering wheel should in thery be usable until it breaks? I suppose there's the danger that driver support could end after 5 years.

The expense is the main reason I've kind of given up of pc gaming generally and haven't upgraded my PC in about 4 years. Though I've just bought a cheap WMR VR headset in the black Friday sales!

I really hope Microsoft and Sony release next gen consoles with next-gen VR headsets soon !

I've thought about buying a console several times but I cant live without keyboard/mouse support in games that favour it. Although keyboard/mouse support is slowly being adopted in consoles. Then there's mods that add really cool features to PC games like VR support in a non-VR games.

So, I've had it for a couple of days now and the result is epic :)

Joined a 26 car multiplayer server on Assetto Corsa last night and what a blast that was :)
Using PPD 1.4 and my GTX970 is running at a constant 90fps. Very happily surprised at that. I see now what people mean about the pixelated gfx in the distance but I can't say it bothers me at all.

Motion sickness = none :D
I got a little dizzy when pulling a high-bank turn in War Thunder but straightened up again and it passed. That's it.

Tried a few things so far (Elite Dangerous, BBC Space Walk Sim, VR Earth and that robot shooting game I forget the name of)

The immersion is truly amazing. I was playing that demo with the little robot and went to take my headset of for a moment and almost put the controllers down on the table in the game first. Had a good chuckle with that.
Can't stop looking at my virtual hands.

Headset is very comfortable (but why does my nose start to itch just as I'm getting to a particularly tricky corner in Assetto Corsa? ;))

Love it so far and very happy I went for it.
Big thumbs up from me.

It depends what you get and how much you use it. I know people still use G27 wheels but the replacement G29 is more plasticky. My T500 feels like it's pretty solid, but again the replacement T300 seems to be cheaper made. Once you get into Fanatec spend levels or the Thrustmaster TS-PC your eyes will start to water, both good kit but can be a bit flaky if you get a bad one by all accounts, I suppose that's the same with everything though. Be warned once you get hooked it's a slippery spending slope lol

Excellent :)
I've found that AC VR settings are really subjective. For example, I have to have 4xAA along with SS, otherwise there's too much 'rippling' and aliasing going on - even at 2xSS.
A steam friend swears by 2xSS with no AA, as he says it makes it too blurry :D

Glad you're enjoying it with good fps and not getting sick.

Told ya!! Now join the OCUK VR group chat on steam and maybe you can join the rest of us in some multiplayer games.

I like my G29 wheel, it's adequate for the limited time I spend sim-racing. The only thing I don't like is the 'notchy', 'clicky' feeling to the force feedback when you lose traction or crash. Having it attached to a folding Playseat Challenge makes it much easer to setup when I do fancy a driving sim. I don't have the room to have a proper racing seat/cockpit setup, so a fold-away solution works great.

G27/G29 are both good, I have both. Recently used the G29 after I broke the T500 and it had to be repaired. It’s definitely less solid feeling than the G27, which I used for about 3 or 4 years. Switching from the T500 to the G29 and back made virtually no difference to my laptimes, but I do prefer the feel and weight of the T500.
