Was happily running a Q9550 @ 3.4 on a P35 board when the board failed. Had tried higher speeds, 3.6 was o'k but was not too keen on increased temps that were needed for it to run ,happily, at this rate.Did not really try for higher as I wasn't happy with temps @ 3.6 and to get it working at higher speeds would obviously involve more volts and higher temps :(

But I wanted 4.00 :)

Replaced the Board with a P5Q-E but found that 3.4 was still the sweet spot and left it there.

Still thinking of 4.00 though :)

Decided to swap to a new cooler - titan Fenrir running with a tuniq fan at half speed (nice and quiet) - it did cool better but still @ 3.4

Still want 4.00 :)

Now spend roughly a fortnight trying to decide wether to upgrade the cpu to a Q9650 or , bite the bullet and move to i7.

Upgrade of chip is cheaper option but I'm ,allegedly, sticking with an outmoded tech.AND the upgrade will cost me at least £100 and for what ?

Move to i7 would however be expensive (£400-500+) and I do not like the sound of load temps of 70c , which appears to be the norm for 4ghz and the 920. :(

Having finally come to the conclusion that I did not want the cost (or the temps) of i7 decided not to upgrade at all - then that ....itch..... came again and in the end - foolish as may be - thought 'get the Q9650' and 4ghz, maybe :):)

Having decided what to do ; guess what? OcUk went to 'out of stock' - is this an omen ? should I not bother?

Leave it for 48hrs....... the itch is back stronger than ever; still no stock at OcUk :(. Thinks 'going to have to go elswhere'... Do... find the chip elswhere and after delaying , again , for 24hrs take plunge.

Chip arrives - Load.

Vid - 1.125 Now that looks good :D:D
And ,if it's of interest to anyone, Produced May '09

Still on P5Q-E & cooled by the Fenrir (fan at half speed)

Temps.
@ standard 25 idle 39 load (to me Prime for roughly 1/2hr )
@ 3.6 - 29 idle 42 load
The above running vid in bios and showing 1.088(or less) in cpu-z

Decided tonight to try for ,the magic, 4ghz so set fsb to 445 and volts @ vid - Fail :( Try again@ 445 but up volts to 1.1825 . GOT IT ; stable @ 4.05 ghz :D:D
Temps - 32 Idle and 52 load .... Wonderful speed but cool and quiet :D:D

Who needs i7 ??

Why didn't I make the move before??

Will probably find that my new chip is not as special as I think it is - but that vid is so low and to run @ 4ghz with only 1.1825v :D:D:D (Might even go lower ? Will look to have a more detailed play @ weekend)

I think I have for the first time ,finally, got a really good overclocking chip, which might even last me a yr before the itch starts again.

Sorry for the ramble - Just had to tell someone :)

Nice clock on the q9650, will probably do a bit more, however id have thought 4ghz on the q9550 and p5qe combo would have been easily achieved, particularly an EO stepping q9550?:)

My Q9550 was a C1 stepping :(

Would say that 3.8 was probably attainable but not sure it would have got to 4 without a substantial boost of volts..... Which would have meant lots more heat & noise which was not acceptable.

Logically probably true to say that I'd have been better trying harder with the 9550 but the new chip would ,hopefully, run faster and cooler AND we are talking upgrade ' itch ' here :D

Would say that the low temps. are,to me, mainly down to the low vid.

Possibly the EO stepping of the chip may have helped - not sure.

As compared to the 9550 (vid of 1.2375 - if memory serves correctly) running exactly the same clock (400fsb) the 9650 is running 10c cooler.:D

Decided to give Intel Burn test a run - it passed but surprised at temp difference as compared to Prime .
Only ran 5 runs at Standard - but load temps were at max of 60c as compared to 52c with Prime (after 30 mins).
I assume that this is 'normal'?

Not so sure on this, for some reason lower VID Chips usually chuck out more heat, and the higher VID doesn't. Sounds completely off i know, but lots of people have found this.

I've the Q9550 and had 4.05Ghz on the P5Q-E no problem, hit around 65C using the Titan also, whats your tjmax set at in RealTemp?
