its now been 5days since I built this and the temps have been up and down since it was hot sat-mon, they are idle at the moment:

CPU: 44'ish
VGA: 62'ish
HDD: 30'ish

heard things about 60c+ is bad, any info so I can reassure myself it won't melt?

LCD monitor (from X-Blade case) shows up as:

CPU: 37
VGA: 51
HDD: 25

if they go past 60c the alarm goes off which it was doing few days ago so I set it to 85c

60+ is " bad " for a CPU.

But , 60+ for a GPU/VGA is no problem.

If you have set your alarm to sound/shutdown at 85 your CPU will be toast by then !!

Only set the GPU/VGA to alarm at 85+. And the CPU to 60+

Cheers,

Mark

Gpu's can go over 100 and they don't even throttle until 125.

Should be folding anyway so its never idle. ;) See sig. \/

at load, about 51 cpu and 72 gpu

kinda high and it wasn't even that hot outside yesterday

any advice? before the summer comes and overwhelms them..

Gpu will probably be ok, perhaps get a Scythe ninja for the cpu or one of the cheaper freezer 64 coolers.

If you do want to deal with the gpu aswell any zalman of arctic cooling vga cooler will be fine, but be aware that it voids your warranty.

> by the way what is folding? any explanations all i know is you leave your comp on 24/7 to "fold"..

Maybe invest in some better cooling or clean out your heatsink.

Ahh a common misconception about folding, pc can be on for as much or as little time as you like. See my sig for more info. You'll like it :p

oops read it incorrectly, those CPU temps look a bit hot. Check your cooler is mounted correctly, right amount of grease etc. Dunno about graphics card, ATI certainly can get that high but nividia's run cooler so sounds high as well?

okay, and in the meantime if it melts I can just replace it with the manafacturer right?

I'm kinda broke at the moment so I can't get any further cooling..

Nothing will melt providing the gpu is <90 and the cpu is <60.
And yes, if the gpu overheats you can send it back providing its still under warranty.

Cleaning out the dust on these things often helps.

think the case has (similiar) to the akasa LED fan 120cm front (blows in) and back (blows out) and one 90mm on the side case (blows out), they seem very weak hardly enough blowing power.

there's no cables left from the psu to allow them to be fitted, so they are linked to the hard drive, dvd-rom & the side i think has an individual connection.. is it the power (580W) or that the runs speeds on the 120mm are 2000rpm? (akasa ones)

if I was to upgrade the cooling, what would I need?

CPU: Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 Aero Flower
VGA: Zalman VF900-CU Quiet Copper VGA Cooler

them any good? my cpu is AM2, as for the case fans, is it because they need power or are they just built slow :p any recommendations on them? (take away my cases lights :( )

If i were you i would get a new cpu cooler but leave the gpu for now unless you want to make it quiet or you have enough money to spend on one. The fact that it voids the warranty is something to bear in mind aswell.

There really isn't much choice for am2 coolers at the moment, so seeing as the zalman is on offer this week i would go for that.

alright new cpu cooler it is, now I just gotta save a load up for the removal stuff, arctic cooler and the fan.

probably stick with stock gfx cooler at the moment, £420 is a bit high to void the warrant, whereas the cpu I did myself so its really upto me about voiding thats warrant.

cheers guys

if you get the artic freexer 64 pro you get the heatsink and fan as well as mx1 (just as good as as5). Just use a tissue to clean it off as well..

Remember to get folding though. Link in sig

High heat will shorten the life of the componets BUT nothing will 'melt' - just refuse to work/boot-up/then shut's itself off/throttle's down/etc in the case of CPU. What chip you got? If AMD, you can look here for your max temps, etc: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/ :)

Also, Thermal grease/compound (the applied/pre-applied gunk between CPU & HSF) needs 200+ hours to settle in

Your load temp at the moment is 51 degrees - Thats fine.

Just don't let is run above 60+.

Removing the existing thermal paste from your CPU with a tissue is O.K just don't leave any "bits" on the CPU , or , go to Boot's ( the chemist ) and get some " Sterets " pre injection swabs ( small pads soaked in Isopropyl Alcohol ) about £3.50 for 100. .

I use these to remove thermal paste and they leave no residue.

Most thermal paste will take 200 hours + to settle , so don't worry about using your computer in the mean time.

The main thing is watch your CPU temp. , 60+ max.

Cheers,

Mark

200+ hours, for the thermal pad..then its okay running at this temp in the meantime or is it a bit risky?
In regards to CPU, 51°C Load should be ok... but people have them at much lower temps so basically aim for the same

Looking at your temps again, what's your chipset/mobo reading? Because that would be a good indication if CPU's running abnormally hot (e.g. HSF not sitting properly, etc) or just the system as a whole (meaning not very good airflow).

Also, you can 'rush' & buy another HSF or pick up a tube of AS5 & try that 1st - see here: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm
