Cool power button mods?

So, I tugged the wire to my power switch to clear a cable snag, and it cleared it a but to easy, and only had another inch of play in it. Result is that the power button is now blu-tacked to the side of the case. It's an Antec 900 so there's no way I can see to reattach it where it belongs (the whole top section is riveted).

I WAS thinking of doing bare wires....to impress/terrify guests as I "hotwire" the PC....but 2 secs rational thought came up with 20 or so decent reasons why that's a retarded idea.

So, apart from just leaving the switch blu-tacked (or bee's waxed or hot melted if I leave it there for good), can anyone think of a fun thing to with the switch (or the wires).

I dont forsee a problem with hotwiring it. Just a momentary switch anyway. No voltages going through it. Maybe 5v maximum.

I always wanted a 'we belong dead' switch on the side of my case that throws out sparks when you 'throw it'. But making decent sparks every time isnt that easy.

Well, my main issues with the idea of hotwiring, were that bare ends oxidize fairly quickly, they also collect fluff. But worse was the possibility of them shorting accidentally and rebooting the machine LOL

I'm just thinking that round here, people take saws to £400 cases, someone's Bound to have come up with a cool power switch idea.

Buy a cheap safe with a numeric keypad, and wire that in to the switch so when you enter the code the PC powers up? Might ending being a total PITA, but certainly original...

That's a good one.

trouble is how would I do an emergenct shutdown with it.

You inspired another idea though.....an ignition key, should be easy enough to do, and will perform all the functions of the normal button.
Not sure where I would mount it though, me+hacksaw+antec900=ordering a new antec900.
Still open to ideas.

Im sure you can take off the plastc top on the 900, cos you can replace the 200mm fan,, theres guides on the net on how to remove the plastic top cover.

not really "power on" related but what about an old laser mouse motion detector mod thingy. I think this is usually used for "waking" the PC.

As for "power on" is there anyway you could set up a usb stick to have like a wireless on button, not sure that even possible but would be bloody cool.

edit - or military syle "fire 1" siwtches:

How about a big red emergancy stop style button?

Militarty style arm missile switch?

PK!

i like them, i was tempted to have 4 of them for the lighting in the case but have not yet had time to work on it for a few months due to uni.

you can get ones with LEDs on the end also.

As suggested already:

Military style toggle switch.

Or keyswitch:

The keyswitch would be pretty cool, but it isnt momentary unfortunatly, so it would be a case of turning it on then off again to work :p

Installed one of those on a friends guitar for turning on LEDs which are hidden behind the pickups :D

I think it would be cool to stick a reed/proximity switch in the case. There would be no button, and you'd just slap the case to get it to start, could look pretty cool :p

Well the links don't work, but they are easy enough to find !

LOL, LOVE the idea of the reed switch (actually, I love em all) but I'm not sure they sell them to Northern Ireland yet LOL...bit of a history of misuse.

Still the idea of a bit of kit where a good kicking is the correct way to make it work as opposed to just the most effective, that's very Dr Who isn't it.

Have a look for Bulgin Vandal Resistant Illuminated Switches too, just need to drill a hole and attach your hot wires and you're done. Look neat too.

lol love the idea of slapping the case to get it to work, can just imagine someone raging while gaming and hitting something that would then turn the PC off... hilarious :D

Naud

You're linking to competitors of OcUK, of course they're not going to work!

It'll get you into a bit of trouble too... FAQ Link

PK!

I thought that was the reason, but, don't think it will matter too much, it's been blanked out anyways, and it's not like it was anything OCUK would sell.

Not to mention the competator in question is an <exploitive deleted> when it comes to CS, and is more expensive that OCUK! ;)
