I've just figured out how to get to this part of the program to change clock speeds etc, now from my understanding i should click on detect optimal settings.

which have gone from 475 core / 580 memory to 573 core and 800 memory.

this is on the stock fan that is on the 7900gto

is this safe, this is the first time i've ever overclocked anything so I'm not 100% sure what im doing

also there is a box that says fan always on should this be checked?

default core on the 7900GTO is 650. Most can do 700 easy. The ram should do 800 easy.

Edit: do you have the 7900GTO or the 7950GT? You better check.

I've got the BFG geforce 7900 GT OC 512mb GDDR3.
it came from the box as 475 core / 580 memory. as now after i clicked detect optimal settings it went to 573 core and 800 memory.

now the memory is literally at the end on the slider, the core is about half way but when i click test it says it can't do it? is that just a fail safe thing? it says it failed to run at any higher clock frequencies here's a screen shot of where im up to http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/7481/untitledrt4.jpg (click on the screen shot and it'll re-size to the correct size.

just done a quick 3d marks.

before i done anything on the gracphics card i was
3DMark Score 4508 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 1915 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 1900 Marks
CPU Score 1376 Marks

norw i've done the optimal settings and gone to what i've put on my previous post I've now got

3DMark Score 5136 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 2249 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 2240 Marks
CPU Score 1389 Marks

I presume this is significantly better

Now I've been told I can keep my memory at 800, but push the core up to 700? would that be wise? when i go test it says t says it failed to run at any higher clock frequencies as i put my previous post.

I think I need to push my cpu up but don't know how to do it.

what do you think i should do. being a complete novice at overclocking

Its important that you know exactly what hardware you have. At first you sadi 7900GTO, which is different from the 7900GT OC (mostly the cooler, and the type of ram module).

I don't think you can expect much more from the 7900GT core, and 800 on the memory is a really good overclock. 800 is the limit on coolbits, you will need a different OC tool to go further. TBH, I don't think your ram will go much further.

Make sure you test your new settings rigorously. Run looping 3d06 benches, or play your favorite game for many consecutive hours (hard work I know, but somebody's got to do it).

FYI: if you get hard locks in games or benchmarks thats probably the core over heating. If you get artifacts or graphical corruption without a lock-up then that is probably the memory overheating. If everything is all good, you can try an push things further. Its always a good idea to isolate your variables - find the limit of the core, then the ram.

IMO you have done well in OC'n your vid card, and your performance now is probably better than your average 7900GT.

As per your cpu OC - that is another kettle of fish. It takes more technical knowledge, time and patience. Its not hard, but its not as simple as moving a slider.

sorry my 7900 is the 7900GT OC (the one where its overclocked from the box) but I've overclocked it a little more. so you think ive got a good clock out of the card?

with regards to the cpu i'll see about that in the processor forum

This thread was a little confusing :)

I would consider any stable overclock a good overclock. An extra 100mhz on the core and 220mhz on the memory?

Hell yeah, that IS a good overclock ;)

You could push the core a little further but, as always, keep an eye on temps and stability.

what would be a stable temp? sorry if it seems a little confusing and/or like questions, questions, questions, its just i've not overclocked anything before and just want to do it correctly without bodgeing up anything

any tips/pointers?

coolbits wont work work for me, any suggestions?

i have downlaodedand installed, nothing and also DIY'd registery edit and got nothing

Just look in the nVidia control panel, the overclocking options should be there.

Go to Control Panel user interface via Nvidia Display and there is the option to choose between Classic control panel(which is what you want) and the new revised panel
Once you have changed it to classic panel the overclocking function returns

The above post applies if you have downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers that have the new Control Panel and you wiswh to use the old one.

ok this worked!!!! you legend!

using auto detect i got 495mhz core and 750mhz on the mem, is this good ?

Yeah that's great!

It will quite possibly overclock even higher, the card has a very decent heatsink attached to it and a lot of people have been getting 800mhz out of the memory. Not sure how far the core can be pushed though.

yeah I've got 800 mem, the core is 573, however if i go any higher it says i need to do the test thing, but it says failed. (i presume its a failsafe in the program i guess) I'm still running fairly cool. how do i get around this and also what is/has people overclocked the core to whilst still being stable?
