You cannot overclock the I5 2400. Only the K series of the SandyBridge series are overclockable, such as the I5 2500k, I7 2600k and I7 2700k.

But that CPU is good at stock speeds regardless.

Ohh dear, my second fail tonight! I could have gotten a cheaper 1155 mobo if I knew this! Ah well, at least its future proof i suppose >.> how long to you think this cpu will last me for gaming? any rough idea? iv just upgraded from Intel quad-core Q6600 ALSO do you know about needing a fresh install of windows or linux on my new mobo?

Thanks

Is there any way you can amend your order? The oem 2500k is only £7 (on OCUK) more expensive and overclocks amazingly.

call the retailer asap. And if it is already shipped, return the CPU, unopened, under DSR (distance selling regulation).

As for the cooler, it's not the best by a long shot. I would have gotten a Hyper 212+ evo, or a Gelid Tranquillo, or even a Zaward Vapor 120, which is cheaper and performs better.

The advantage over a better cooler is the ease of installation, since it uses standard clips.

IIRC, you can 'refuse' the order, if you are there when the delivery man comes around. Meaning the entire box will be returned to the retailer, and refunded. You may incur shipping of some sort, but if you are there when the goods arrive, you can return everything on the spot and start again.

i might just keep the cpu (i bought the cpu on it own for £100), however i might look into returning my fan for a zaward vapor 120 if its cheaper

I didn't realise you only paid 100 quid for it mate. In that case it's a bargain. You might be able to eke an extra couple of hundred mhz out of it with overclocking, which I was able to do with an i3-2120.

for £100, it's ok. Stick with it for a while, sell it at minimum loss if you upgrade to IvyBridge / 2500K. The TX3 will do for a 2400, with a little overclock (I think it's only turbo boost?). It's a good stock fan replacement.

The 2400 / 2500K@stock are still beasts. The only downside is having an expensive motherboard, that can only give its full potential with unlocked CPUs. You can maybe score a 2500K on the cheap, but then you will need a better cooler to justify it (Hyper 212+ evo / Gelid Tranquillo would be my pick if you want bang for bucks). Then again, you may feel the improvement to be marginal. There is no point getting a better cooler than the TX3 with the 2400, but if you want to plan ahead, then I'd score one of the other two I suggested. The Zalward performs well, although it is difficult to find reviews. I've seen it competing with the 212+, which is a good sign.

some test reviews.
