Coolest processor?

Which of the available processors runs the coolest?

I am to build a PC using Lianli's new small form factor case, subject of a separate thread on these forums. The PC must be as quiet as possible, therefore I want to choose the processor that runs the coolest so that it needs less cooling = less noise.

I have a 478 pin Pentium that runs at 35c and also an AMD Socket A computer that runs at 50c. Is it still the case that Pentium runs cooler than AMD?

An underclocked, undervolted sempron would be pretty cool I would imagine. I'm sure the case would be able to cope with something a bit toastier though.

all intel figures are based on averages, but don't say what the average load/application is. average for "all" users would be very low. amd post absolute maximum theoretical numbers, in theory what the chip could possibly use when the cache, every part of the cpu, the memory controller is all utterly 100% maxed out which is honestly a very very rare situation, even in a under load game it won't always be doing something intensive, it will go up and down as sometimes its waiting for data. so more than likely even when you are maxing cpu amd numbers are an over estimate, if you are maxing a intel cpu the numbers are very very very underestimated.

not to mention that northbridges get very hot, way less so on ath 64 boards, much hotter on intels due to the mem controller so a good deal of the wattage of northy is separate for intels, but incorporated into ath 64's. talking 10w maybe, faster, more voltage and more overclocked means more and more juice. a conroe doesn't run just as low wattage as people think.

That's why I'm waiting, I hope Merom comes to LGA775. I like mobile wattage numbers.

its the same chip, just think average use, the average use ona desktop is likely to include a lot more work than average use of a laptop therefore numbers are different, but thats because of the way they are used, not because they are really different. also wattage/speed is more like a exponential number, if you clock up a memron to higher speeds wattage won't increase linearly.

Pentium M's runs really cool

I have a 2.13 @ 1.1v with the default cooler fan @ 750rpms in the Aopen MZ
temps................... 25 degrees idle.

Absolute silence :D

Merom is not LGA775 format and im pretty sure it wont be.

Its a 479pin format chip.
Yarrs, I know... But you can never tell with Intel.

Can you do me a massive favour? Check how low you can get the volts on your conroe at stock speeds please?

Ha! OK. I need to get myself a P5W DH, then clock my RAM to hell and back before sticking a conroe in there.

On a side note, the PSU calculator says a conroe E6600 at 3.6Ghz on stock volts pumps out 98W whereas a Merom at the same speed and stock volts only pumps out 53W. OK so it says stock volts are 1.34 but it makes no difference provided both values are the same.

Why is there such a big difference?
