want to build a PC for the living room. it has to be a quite as possible. to this end iam going for as much passive cooling as possible. what the coolest running amd chip that i can cool with a Scythe Ninja Plus Heatpipe (in passive mode)

the chip has to be powerful enough to burn dvd/cds, run a few games (mainly for the kids so doesn't need to be running at the highest settings but must run as a good speed) and be able to do light video/pic editing, recording TV and playback

You won't be able to run any of the latest AMD64 chips passive all the time.

What you could do though, is run it with a Scythe Ninja and a very quiet 120mm and run AMD cool and Quiet and speed fan so that the fan is either off or spins very slowly when the computer is idle and undervolting itself through C&Q (you may get away with passive depending on heat output from other components and the airflow in the case).

and again with speedfan, get the fan to kick in 100% when it reaches a certain temperature.

Not sure how the 165 oppy is for cooling, but for performance it is great.
For a low temp, my 3800+ X2 is cool as a cucumber, 30degree idle at stock speeds with my zalmon 9500, all the fans on low. Its also a good performer.
Would be fine with a passive Ninja on it, just make sure theres some airflow through you case.

I've got a S754 Turion 2800 (the laptop version of the A64) that is amazing, even at 1V it runs at 1.6Ghz easily, and still overclocks. That can run passive on the stock A64 cooler without the fan running.

That would easily be upto the jobs you mention.

Not sure if a 165 be the best option. You might be better off with a single core as they run a lot cooler than duals and a 2ghz single core be more than capable of burning and watchin dvds

Those chips look awesome Minstadave, currently building a little shuttle which is socket 754 but those chips are expensive. Trying to build for less than £100 and I've spend £40 already and only have a case, motherboard.. darn.

You could always undervolt a 90nm Sempron (Palmero Core), they don't have as much cache as the Turion, but they excellent clockers and will run cool at low volts

Hm, interesting, I've not followed 754 stuff. Performance wise how does it measure up to Newcastle and Turion cores? It's mainly going to be used as a webserver and gaming server, but I may get it to fold aswell.
