coolest running low-end cpu

I'm looking to build a really low spec pc as I have a terrible idea for a case mod I want to try out. Anyway, I'm looking for the coolest running CPU I can get. its speed is irrelevant as this PC will be for writing documents and general web surfing. I won't be overclocking and my budget for cpu + mobo is about £100 but would pay more for something ideal.

If there's nothing that would run much cooler than my current spec I might use that and just build a better main machine.

Im intrigued.

hmm, I don't really want to say what it is until I finish (in case I totally mess it up and look like an idiot) but I've done the worst of it (IMO) so far ok. still, should be finished in a couple of weeks (if i can get the things i need by then...) and i'll post pics.

couldnt you go for P3 or something.

erm, I don't know. Yeah, I mean anything would be fine, I just don't know what the normal operating temps are for anything pre AMD 64 tbh (or anything intel at all for that matter).

however, should have mentioned, I need to run it on a mATX board and as I only have SATA drives lying around, might be nice if the CPU would be compatible with a board that supports it (i can't really put in PCI cards of any description for this mod - so guess i'll need onboard sound and vga too)

thanks for your help. yeah, the xp-m's seem like a cheap option. think im almost certainly gonna head that way.

thanks again.

yeah, I read something about underclocking somewhere and they only managed to drop the temps by about 7 oC. Maybe it wasn't a great source but if that's typical it doesn't really seem worth it. I always thought semprons ran really hot as well.

so on OcUK i could get a sempron for about £50 (inc vat + p&p) and I'm looking at about £10 less for a mobile processor. guess i should think about mobo options.

which do you think?

what about a Celeron M? those things run cool and are really cheap now . :)

nah, I think the mobos for them cost a bomb. i don't really wanna spend that much for something which is gonna turn out to be a disaster anyway.
