Cooling 295x2 outside case mod

Recently got a 295x2 and was struggling for where to put the rad i wanted optimal cooling without heating up the cpu so i decided that the only real place to mount it would be outside the case! Some will hate the basically bodge job nature of this idea, but i wanted to cool it better for zero cost. I like to mess with things so its worked out rather well.

I had to send the cables through the rear of the case, i couldnt/didnt want to take them off so made a slot in the case just wide enough for it to fit without the fan on. i made sure all the edges were smooth to not damage the pipes. after that i had a small piece of angled aluminum which i drilled and then drilled the case simply put it all backtogether adding a second old fan i had laying around.

Firestrike ultra topped out at 65c with a modest overclock on the card
Core 1080
mem 1340

Ill take it futher when time allows.

Nice, don't think I could face cutting holes in my case but top quality bodging there and from those temps looks like it works pretty well :)

Doesn't bother me,its a lot tidier then in that pic now its done and they were only vent holes anyway. The only other way to get similar cooling was a new case or a aio for the cpu and then mount both rads at the top of the case. not enough room with my tower cooler on there now.

I don't think I have ever seen one hung in that orientation before. Usually they get mounted where the 120mm exhaust fan goes. Nice to see ghetto mods are still alive and well. :D

Careful with those sharp metal bits! Would a couple of better fans not be sufficient?

There are no sharp edges anymore that was just after i cut the case, i rolled the edges back so they are basically smooth. Also added a small rubber edge around where they touch the most.

bf4 maxed out is only hitting 55c, i could have got better fans but i still was struggling for room to mount the thing. this cost me nothing and works better! happy days!

Messing with overclocking it now, seems the vrms are overheating (98c on the back of them) stuck a tiny fan over them and scores improved.....now got to work on a ghetto cooling solution for this. wondering about sticking those small copper heatsinks you can get onto the back of them using thermal tape, with a fan to actively cool those!? any better ideas?

Ive done this a few times in the past, you should see the state of my case, it looks like its been in a gun fight and lost. I have a 360 mounted to the back of my case atm as i ran out of space inside.

Some people are put off buying some great products cause they aint gonna fit into their case, but i like seeing people just using their imagination and making stuff work.

I admit, when I see cards that won't fit in my case (due to HDD bays) I consider buying some tin snips and getting stuck in...

Do it,unless you sell your case's often or its a silly expensive one its not even a money issue. You cant see the bits you snip but might just make it better for yourself.

I couldn't care less what my PC looks like to be honest. It looks pretty nice ATM, but Id happily spray it hot pink if it saved me a few degrees... I bought a case without a window so I can load it full of noctua's prosthetic limb beige fans lol.

My first pc was overheating (pentium D) so I cut a hole in the blank 5.25" bays with a fold back survival knife and screwed an 80mm fan onto it with woodscrews. No fan guard or anything lol. Still got the scar on the knuckle of my thumb from when the knife flipped back and got me...
