Going to be building an overclocked IB gaming system but stuck on what to cool it with

Here's what I have so far.

Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £189.95 (£158.29)
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 560Ti 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £164.99 (£137.49)
Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £103.99 (£86.66)
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 650W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXV2UK) £78.98 (£65.82) Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB)
DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £43.19 (£35.99)
Sony Optiarc AD-7280S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.98 (£13.32)
Total : £609.08

What cooling combo do I really need for an overclocked IB?

Any Cpu cooler & case recommendations would be awesome, best value for money @ around a 4.5GHz+ overclock.

Cheers,
Dan

Make sure you get low profile RAM... like 20-30mm tall... so it not only fits under cooler but is low enough so a 140mm fan will fit over it and clear side cover.

Fractal Design Arc Midi

Alpenfohn K2
Noctua NH-D14
Phanteks PH-TC14PE (my choice)
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme (faster and noisier fans)

That's just a few of the best off the top of my head . There are many more.

Hi m8,

Just a word of advise what ever cooler that you get check the hight of it and make sure
there is enough clearance room in your case for the side panel to go back on as this is
something that people usually forget and then they find it wont go on or its really tight
to get back on.

P.S. Akasa AK-CC4008HP01 Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler is also a nice cooler its what i use

Thanks for the suggestions.

Does it really take a £60+ to keep temps down with IB cpus? I thought socket 1366 was bad enough...

I'm trying to get the best value hs/case cooling 'sweet spot' without affecting overclocking so it gives me more to spend elsewhere, mainly on the gpu.

Overclocking & cooling is the main requirement!
After that comes things like large quiet fans, dust filters, USB 3.0 which would be nice.

There are many good coolers £30-60. Basic rule of thumb is the more pipes and bigger the radiator the more potential cooling. "Basic" being key word as not always true.

High overclocking and top of the line coolers run hand in hand... overclock = heat. Highest overclock are on liquid nitrogen.

Do a search on this forum for "3570 overclock". Look at OC speed and what cooler is being used.

Earth, for now
I already had a cheap Arctic Freezer rev 2 (around £13 or so) and so I used that with my 3570k. Once I flipped the lid on the chip (and used the liquid metal TIM) I get, at most, 75c when at full load with a 0.06v offset for 4.4Ghz overclock in a warm room.

The above cooler is also ok for my LP Corsair and OCZ RAM, which occupy all four DIMM slots.

I know the IB cpus run hot but does an overclocked IB need better cooling than an overclocked i7 950?

Also, Please can a mod fix the typo in the title :(

Good call!

Wouldn't have spotted that case, How does it compare to an Antec 1200 on air flow & noise?
I was either looking too high end (Haf-x) or trying to get away with an entry level case to put £ elsewhere.

Here's the updated build, changed the graphics card to use more of the budget. If only I could save £50 on the case and add it to more graphics speeeeed :D

Sapphire HD 7850 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £191.99 (£159.99)
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £189.95 (£158.29)
Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £103.99 (£86.66)
Corsair Carbide 500R Midi Tower Case - Black £99.95 (£83.29)
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 650W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXV2UK) £78.98 (£65.82)
Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £43.19 (£35.99)
Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler (Socket LGA2011/1366/1155/1156/775/ AMD AM3/AM3+/AM2/AM2+/FM1) £26.39 (£21.99)
Sony Optiarc AD-7280S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.98 (£13.32)

I've had another look and updated my wish list...Beefed up the cooling but can't really justify the supermega + it needs fans on top of that price.

I would like a latest gen graphics card so may hold off till the Nvidia GTX 660 is out, what's that like a months wait?

I have the same motherboard , processor and ram as in your wishlist all in a antec 300 case with an artic 7 freezer pro v2....

currently overclocked to just 4.1Ghz , vcore at 1.16v , idle temps at 33 and full load at 65..

so a cheap and cheerfull cooler will do the job if in a case with good ventilation...

;)

Thanks for the recommendations!

Too many combos to choose from...almost committed to getting the Akasa AK-CC4008HP01 Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler in a Haf-X case.

Looks like Ivy bridge run hotter than I was expecting at the clocks I'm aiming for and if OCUK use a ~£50 cooler for builds (Prolimatech Megahalem CPU Cooler + fan) so there must be a good reason for it right???

If OcUK is using it on their OC build then it much be good enough. It's a good cooler but it's not a K2 or Phanteks or Silver Arrow SB-E

What are you using on you i7 950?

I need your motherboard ;) mine is acting sick :(

Was wondering why they would use a cooler that no one has recommended yet, must be good but they could cut costs by using one that everyone on here seems to to recommending.

The 950 system I used to have ran a Thermaltake Frio (before the price doubled :S), good cooler but ear plugs required at high temps....rated for 220w thermal cooling that the 950 seemed close too!

Prolimatech Megahalem has a good rep here.

There are lots of very good coolers that most people have never heard of.

Zaward Vapor 120 for example. Not big, but a very good cooler on lower wattage CPUs Put one on wife's Athlon II X4 620 @ 3.5GHz 1 fan and no problem cooling at all.

Thanks for all the help.

With around £40 to spend on a cooler it looks like there are plenty out that that give within a few degrees performance of each other, it's when you go top-end that there are bigger gains.

Changed my mind again to the Thermalright True Spirit 140, should be quiet enough with good performance for 4.5GHz+

Can't wait to order and see how much over 4.5 it gets :D
