1. Copy Spinpoint 80GB drive (OLD PC, Athlon XP system) to a WD Raptor (OLD PC, Athlon XP system) via Acronis True Image

2.) Install WD Raptor (NEW PC, A64 system)

3.) Erase Spinpoint contents

4.) Install Spinpoint (NEW PC, A64 system)

5.) Use Spinpoint drive as backup redundancy. :)

That all feasible with say driver controllers, etc? Plug and play basically>

There is a reason Plug & Play is nicknamed Plug & Pray ;)
While the drive- drive copying should work nicely & with no problems, the problems arise when you install the cloned drive into the new system (I presume they are both SATA?- If not, then you may need to turn on SATA IDE emulation to get the drive recognised initially)
You would then need to boot into safemode and delete basically the whole contents of device manager before rebooting and installing the drivers for the new machine, if it gets that far.

To my mind, its more trouble than its worth- I would do a fresh install of Windows on the new PC, slave the old drive and copy the stuff you want across which will be much better in the long run.

Swapping the os from drive to drive isnt a problem but changing mobo's most likely will!

In the long run i'd go with the above suggestion of doing a fresh install of XP at least then if theres problems you cant blame leftovers from the previous system.

Having said that if you uninstall at least the ide/graphics/plug 'n play/other obvious onboard hardware then it might just be your lucky day and XP will pick up all the new stuff after a reboot or two.

Either way hope it all goes ok.

Life is simpler with a reinstall of the OS on the new SATA drive. There are methods of getting XP to upgrade the drivers in use, but they are tied into the HAL a bit too much and it all gets far toooo messy and technical.

I'm am pretty good with all this IT stuff.... but when I attempted it I wasted hours on it. And then finally gave up.... PC was due a reinstall anyway. :)

Much simpler to slam the new SATA in as a fresh drive and start clean. :D

I done the same thing as u want to do with a maxtor pata 80 gig to 80 maxtor sata using Maxblast .Put your pata drive in first get it working then clone it on to the sata.I took my pata drive from an amd xp rig with a Giga-byte board and put it strait in with an Asrock SataII and Opteron with no problems.Just a bit of deleting and reinstalling of drivers.Give it a go whats the worst that can happen.
